My problem.
I only edit 20 shots for a model, so in order for her to choose the best IHO, she needs to view all the images say max 400.

Easy for me, Canon DPP, Browser EX, Photoshop,iPad Air.
But if she only has a PC windows, I don't think these come with software that displays a RAW image - well on mine you can just see loads of little flower icons.

Also at 22 MB I cant even email one to her and say can you view it, as Outlook rejects it as I try to load the file, and says "Image file exceeds max permissible file size.

So I just need to be able to say download XYZ Free software and I will send the shoot to you on a USB stick. Then she pics her fav. 20 I edit them and return them on the USB.

I dont want to go the dropbox route, or I will be constantly on the phone doing tel. Support to how can I say it " well some are not the brightest on the planet IT wise"
No offence meant - hell I don't look as good as they do! - but don't take offence.

Just want the simplest thing to view the files, no editing features needed at all.

Any ideas?

Heya,

Seems it would be more simple to simply batch convert the images to JPG, maintain the file name, send those. They tell you the file names of the ones they want. You simply take your RAWs and do post on the ones they liked. Send final images. Done. You can even just batch convert and batch re-size them so they're small enough for emailing as a zip. They don't need higher resolution than 1920, since most screens stop there for most consumers anyways. They don't need to zoom in, as the image is not going to be seen zoomed. A set of 400 images will then comfortably fit in a zip file.

Edit: also, water mark the proofs so they don't end up on facebook without at least advertising that you did them. All this can be done via batch processing.

Very best,

W8 supports viewing raw, other flavors of windows have things you can load to view raw files both decoders and raw viewers, but the easiest is to do what Malveaus says and batch convert.

Very best,

This is the way I would go, you can even throw a watermark that says proof on it, so that even well intentioned, an untuned RAW doesn't get converted and printed without it being obvious.

If you really trust the model, Microsoft makes a plugin for at least Windows 7, that I found through searching their support forums years ago, that makes it so RAW files will display in thumbnails and then consequently MS picture viewer.

I would never send RAW files, for these reasons...

  1. You are sending originals, and there is ZERO reason why they ever need to pay you for any photos!
  2. You are sending originals, and these have NOT been processed as YOU wish them to appear, to yield the exposure, contrast and brightness adjustment, improvement of shadow detail, etc. that you envison are best for the shot. That can bite you in the a$$ when someone sees a substandard photo that someone converted from your RAW file, and thinks the garbage shot is yours!
  3. You are sending files 10-20x larger in file size than you really need to.

You need to give me OK to edit your image and repost! Keep POTN alive and well with member support https://photography-on-the.net/forum/donate.php

Dropbox is also an option. Not sure about what can open Raw files that is free but I do most of my transfers of photos via Dropbox.

Thanks and take the point - looks like batch is the way to go!
I initially avoided this to save space my end, plus never done batch converts!
Need to learn I guess!

Canon's DPP does it. Very easy. It's under File -> Batch Process. Select file type (JPG). Resize setting. Select naming structure (new, with same number sequence for easy comparison, but different prefix). Give it a directory. Done.

would it be a silly suggestion to just shoot raw + small jpeg?

There is no reason for you to keep the jpgs on your machine.

That would be my choice. Or I'd do a batch convert using FastStone (which is, essentially the same as IJFR, just extracting the embedded jpeg) because that can add a watermark during the conversion.

This ++

no processing, just send the .jpgs. Sending RAW images is silly for all the reasons Wilt mentioned.

Why has no one recommended IrfanView? Have I misunderstood the question? I've always used that to view my raw images, delete the bad ones and then import the good ones into Lightroom to process. Regardless, I would also suggest sending jpegs.

Very best,

Sounds ideal, as I know DPP reasonably well and seems simple. Thanks.
