Save your money for a while more and look at the Giottos tripods. I prefer to have a hands on experience with gear I plan to use a lot. I was just reading one of my photographic mags and they suggest spending 1/3 of what your camera and lens cost on the tripod. This isn't shill for them but check out B&H cameras offerings. They seem to be competitive on prices.

Don't get the manfrotto or gitzo head. What is your remaining budget for the head?

I have the Manfrotto 460MGrc2 on my old tripod. I converted it to Arca Swiss but I still prefer my RRS BH-55 by leaps and bounds. I would have trouble recommending the 460MG.

I wouldn't buy anything other than an Arca Swiss compatible head, period. The sag/droop you get from the manfrotto quick release clamp/plates are hmmmmmm annoying, at best.

A Horusbennu ballhead might do the trick on that budget.
