For those of you with brick/mortar galleries, what do you use for POS?

A lot of people I know with small boutiques or gallery shows that they sell prints / canvases at are using Square. PayPal and a few other companies also have mobile card readers. No overhead like some of the other POS machines.

PS - Where are you located? The options I listed are US specific, not sure about other countries.

Square even has a device that will convert an iPad into a proper POS machine.
Haven't used it, but have been to retail locations that do. It looks pretty slick and it took my money.

Thanks for the responses. I'm located in the US and have been using Paypal's mobile device card reader a few months. I'm also looking into Intuit's POS system that includes card read and receipt printer. Again, thanks for the comments.

Depending on where you live you might contact your financial institution and ask them if they have any contacts for merchant services. If you are talking about running a system in a B&M scenario this might be a good option for you.

One thing to keep in mind, don't let anyone talk you into a web based, wireless solution unless network security is one of your strengths. Most breaches involving small businesses involve a wireless, web based solution being set up by someone with a tenuous, at best, grasp on the security required.

I'd go with Square Register. It can connect a thermal receipt printer if you need it and a cash drawer. Gives you up to the minute sales reports. It's insanely intuitive for a POS. I've looked into local EMS companies and they all try to "nickel and dime" you to death with fees for fees ontop of fees. I've been using Square for the past 7 years and they have not done me wrong yet! *okay Square Inc. send me my shameless plug check :)
