When using multiple 580 II flashes with my 1DmkIv I prefer to control the flashes via the camera's menu. This is under the second "camera" menu under the "external speedlite control" tab. After each shot my 1D4 defaults back to the far right * menu (my custom menu). Is there a setting that will let the body stay at the last used menu when I hit the menu button? This would save me many button pushes. I looked through my owners manual and if its there I didn't see it. Can anyone help? Thank you.

I don't think so, but you could add "External Flash Control" to the "My Menu" list and reduce it to one button push.

Yes there is, and it's inside "My menu". The camera will either open up the most recently used menu tab or My menu when you press the MENU button.

Thanks for the replies. So I guess the default menu is "My Menu" if you have items set up in it. I don't recall it originally being this way but I've had My Menu set up for a long while. I'll just add "External Speedlite Control" to My Menu. Again thanks.

Steve

Anders is right, as usual.

You can set it to remember the last menu screen that you used by disabling "Display From My Menu".

I forgot about this feature as I find having flash control within My Menu, along with the other settings that I use most, coming up first when I press Menu more useful.

The 5D3 has this option as well, I see.

Since My Menu would contain commonly used settings, why would one not want the My Menu screen to be displayed first? Why would I want it to go to the last used menu?

Many thanks. I changed the setting on "Display From My Menu" and I open up where I previously left off. Very convenient. When I'm through shooting a flash session I simply change Display From My Menu back and the convenient My Menu defaults again.

I have filled My menu on my cameras with stuff I've found I frequently use, but I don't set the camera to go there every time I press the MENU button. If I'm working with something which for example requires access to a certain tab among the custom function, I'll probably return to that tab to adjust things several times. I don't want to go there from My menu each time, but I want that tab to be the first to show up each time I press the MENU button. Next time it's perhaps an AF setup tab I'm experimenting with, and then I want that one to show up each time I press MENU.

With 26 different menu tabs in the camera, moving across several of them each time isn't always convenient! :)

So that's one reason for why you not always want My menu to be the one which comes up first.

Horses for courses I suppose.:)

Though I will consider disabling My Menu in the future if I want to use some obscure menu item(that I don't normally use) repeatedly for a short time. If I want to use it for a longer period of time, I still think that it would be easier to just add it to My Menu.

True, but my mind is old an confused, so it I do that, I'll probably loose track of what I actually have saved in My menu. Then I'll go there looking for something which isn't there any longer, which will take me even longer.
