Well where do I start, first I would just like to say that since I had my 20d + 70-200 L IS and the 28-135 calibrated in March 2005 they have never let me down, I could trust them 110%, I could pick up the camera and shoot knowing that I would get the shot no worries, where as with the 1ds MKII there’s no way I could trust it, it would get the focus 3 times out of ten and even then it was back focusing where as the 20d would get it ten out of ten.

In AI servo the 1ds was a joke, every image was out of focus, It was slower than my 20d in every way, I was beginning to think it was me that could not operate the camera but I tried all the focusing tests and everyone of my lenses were back focusing but were working fine on the 20d.

So I rang Canon and told them my problem and asked how long it would take to calibrate the 1ds to my lenses and they said about 1 week but they told me to bring everything in, I took everything into Canon on Friday the 27th January and they delivered it back on the Monday the 6th February, well I’m blown away by how fast this camera is now that they replaced the AF system and calibrated it, every lens is pin sharp right out of the camera, through all apertures and focal lengths, unbelievable camera.

How can they let an $8000 camera come out of the factory in this state is beyond me. Sorry to go on but I’m just dumb struck that this could happen to such an expensive item.

Here are a few I took tonight, handheld no pp, from raw.

Bruce

hey you are form the UK, just consider it like a jaguar. Great when they run. Key word is WHEN. LOL, j/k. things like this do happen, regardless of their cost.

Glad to see everything is running smooth.

The assumption is allways that they let it go out of the factory as a POS,.. and I'm sure it happens but come on folks.. we all know the vagueries of shipping and handling.. these things came across the ocean amongst the many many shipping stops along the way,. not to mention our own local UPS football team that dropped it on your porch.

Cost has no bearing,. there are lots of opportunities for something to get knocked out of alignment,,. and no production line is 100% flawless either.

I'm really glad to see it is working as it should after the tune up :)

Dante and CDS, you've hit the proverbial nail on the head, as usual.

How many Mercedes break down right after ownership? I saw a guy stranded in the city recently with a brand new S500 being winched on a flatbed. That car only cost about 12 times what the camera does.

My brother in law, who is a member of the football team you spoke of, said "fragile" on a box just means they drop it from a greater distance.

Glad Canon fixed it for you.

Sony23, glad you got it fixed. On the subject of you "taking your camera in to Canon" - is this service offered over here in the UK - does Canon have service centres where the paying public can take their kit into for "adjustment"? Sorry to appear stupid (I heard that!:-) ) but I thought any gear would have to be "shipped" back to them via a dealer.

Thanks guys, sorry I didnt get back sooner its been busy here, I do understand about the shipping of these items but I never heard of one of these cameras ever going back for a new AF system:lol: .

Teejay I emailed Canon last March asking to send in my camera and they gave me the address to send it to but this time there was no way I was going to send in £8000 worth of equipment through the post so I took it there myself which was a 3 hour round trip.

One more thing, I just had to perform major surgery, sensor clean and mirror, but I still see loads of spots of dust though the view finder  , the joys of owning a digital camera.

If you're seeing them in the viewfinder, that's not unique to DSLRs - you get the same problems in film SLRs. But they won't affect the pictures.

That dust is on your focus screen and/or mirror, not your sensor. Sensor dust can only be seen by taking a picture at a very small aperture, not when the mirror is down.

Thanks Jon

and cdi I had dust spots on my sensor, I took a few pictures today and noticed on the images spots all over , so I did a wet clean which cured the spots on the images but I still have dust spots in the view finder which I cannot get off even with a wet clean,

Before I cleaned the sensor, this was shot at F6.3 but I noticed a few spots so I ran a few more tests at F22 and there were spots everywhere, I tried with the blower but it made it worst which is why I now have the spots in the view finder, I tried the brush method but it didnt work so I got out the eclipse fluid and that worked on the sensor but not on the focusing screen or the mirror, any ideas where I go from here will help.

Bruce

I know Jon, but it is so annoying that I can see them in the view finder:lol: .
