Good stuff! As a sailor myself, I would recommend getting some of the spinnaker (genaker) sets and douses as well as some of the boats as a whole while under spinnaker).

Tough stuff when you are on the water bouncing around. You did good.

Nice shots, brings back a lot of racing memories which for me was all in monohulls. All ancient history for me I'm afraid, as illness has forced me to give up being an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor.

I don't understand why so many of the crew are lying on the cat foredecks. Anyone able to enlighten me?

My guess would be for a low wind profile. I remember seeing Star crew laying on the hull. Really good shots of very large boats.

Looks like lighter winds, so they are laying on the bows to keep the bow in the water and the transom out. Since there is no place to easily sit or hike, it is better to simply lay down so as not to fall off. Falling off is slow in a race.

A lot of boats, especially modern designs with wide rear ends are faster in light winds with the transom out of the water. It reduces wetted surface and reduces drag. Too much weight in the back increases drag and really slows the boat down.

Contrast that to heavy winds and sailing downwind. In those conditions you want the weight in the back to keep the bow out and encourage the boat to plane (if it is capable) or surf.

Many thanks for the explanation. My background is extremely limited when it comes to sailing high performance cats. An ex partner in a boat years ago came from a cat background and that's about it.

Not just cats. A lot of the modern monohulls have very wide transoms and fine entries. I had a 22' sport boat with a hull basically shaped like a "V" if you looked down from above. In light winds, it was crew forward to the shrouds to get weight forward. In heavy air downwind, it was crew back so it would plane on that wide back end.

I've raced small boats where downwind you put one crew on the bow to get weight forward going downwind and get the back out of the water.

Impressive machines, for sure. I still miss the more elegant monohulls but I guess that's what they call progress.

I'm mainly here for the snacks
