Lighting was definitely not very good in the gym, but I made due.

Everything shot with a Canon 6D and Sigma 70-200mm OS

You have some nice captures. Looks like the 6D does pretty good with sports, even with the slower frames per second. Some of the images could be cropped tighter, if you wanted a tighter focal of a player. Nice job.

Thanks. I was also impressed by the 6D. On occasion, it would miss focus when I don't pan quick enough but that's my fault.

As for cropping, I'll give it another look. I kept flip flopping between hope they are now and a tighter crop.

Does the 6d have the focus menu with 5 different "Cases" like the 5D3? I use either Case 2 or 4 for basketball with a single point focus point in AI Servo.

I have not seen anything like that while going through the menus. Would need to take a better look through the manual to confirm or deny its existence.

Thanks, and hah. Maybe - do you shoot away games for Oxy or just home games?

For those of you that shoot more basketball, do you typically like tighter crops in most shots?

Great shots. The 6D focus is not its strong point, although I have used mine for sport but I will always turn to my 7Ds first unless in really poor light that means I need to really push the ISO.

Thanks mrrikki

Yeah. I wish I had my old 60D too for shooting lacrosse for my school. I always turn them down because I don't have anything long enough to shoot lacrosse.

I am guessing you are standing for most of the shots? You can change perspective slightly and usually for the better by getting as low as possible...ie sitting on the floor and shooting up at the players, rather than standing and shooting "down" on them.

I was moving around - standing on some and sitting on others. I did just notice that all the ones I posted, I happened to be standing.

CJ, 1st item that caught my attention was, "peak action". You have very good timing with regard to that aspect. Well done. 2nd item that I noticed was that you were standing for almost all of the photos. Thus I 2nd "cstewarts" comments with respect to creating a lower perspective. I kneel (but on my haunches). Most photogs sit. Example, photos #1 & #6, point guard, Garrett James, is listed at 5' 9" (I'll bet he's shorter.), if you would have caught him while you were sitting, it would give the average viewer a perspective that he/she is not use to, and be a bit more dynamic. Lastly, "shoot tight & crop a bit tighter." Keep up the wonderful work. I checked your Flickr page. You have some very imaginative & artistic work there. Well done!

Thank you both. I will try to sit a lot more the next time I have an opportunity to shoot basketball.

As for the action, I will attribute that to being a former player. I have a decent sense of where the "peak action" will be and played with a lot of these guys my freshman and sophomore year.

EDIT: And you are right, Garrett is about 5'7"

EDIT 2: Thank you as well for the kind words about my Flickr page :) It really means a lot.

Hey CJ - You should come on out to the LAX game at Chapman on Sunday (I assume you're from Chapman). I have a kid at Chapman and a kid at ASU (who plays on the lacrosse team) and I shoot for ASU. One of the other gals who shoots for us uses the same 70-200mm you have (according to your signature line) and she gets great shots! You just sort of have to wait for the action to come to you. Come on out on Sunday and give it a shot (pun intended)! Make sure you say hi if you do.
