I did a shoot last week for a work colleague. Her sideline is to dress up as princesses and go to children's parties. She wanted some pictures taking for her website.

I wasn't going to charge her as I need the practice and she has agreed to do a party for my daughter in return. So this is a hypothetical question really.

But the gist of it was she wanted some pictures for her website, her and another girl turned up and I spent maybe three hours shooting. Between them there were 9 costume changes and a short headshot (plain clothed) session for each of them.

For each costume she ended up with about 10-15 shots from tight headshots, 3/4 and full length shots - so maybe 120-150 shots in total. I have given her the jpegs as she will need them to put onto her website.

Out of interest how much would people have charged for such a session?

Thanks in advance

I would have charged a half day and one time usage for her site would be $1100.00

On top of the half day cost?

Thanks for the reply.

For something like this that would be total. $900 half day and $200 for usage on her site.

Does this help?

Ok, yes, thanks. I was unsure about the licensing thing for her use. I understand people not wanting to give away the 'originals' for people to just do what they like with them, but in this case she would obviously need an electronic copy. So it's good to know people just have a charge for things like that.

I don't think I'm quite at the level of charging $900 for half a day :) but I'm still trying to figure things out. I've mostly seen packages for engagement/family/child/pet sessions etc. but this didn't really fit into any of those 'package' pigeon holes.

Thanks again

That $200 would be for her website only and she would only receive low res images. If she needed work for printed ads and other things that needed high res images that would cost more.

And any photoshop work beyond the basics (color balance and converting from raw) would also be additional at $75 per hour.

It really depends on the market as to what you charge.

For me a 3 hour shoot with editing of 150 shots would be around a 5 hours once you include editing. so just over a 1/2 day

I would probably quote around $500 for the shoot and editing, and then for 150 shots in low res for her website - $200.

So for me it would have been around $700 total

again really depends on your market.

I'd say the above pricing is very fair.

Thanks for comments. I understand that it's totally dependent on the area and stuff but it's nice to get some ballpark figures.

I was thinking I would have charged £150 ($250) seen as I am just starting out. I think I did a reasonable job, so I don't want to undersell myself, but also realise I can't just go out there and start charging too high of a price.

Cheers again.

I think you did an awesome job. I am in the same boat, I am new to the photography and I had the same dilemma couple of times. Thanks for making the thread. :)

Last time I was involved in paying someone for work like this it set us back about $5K for a full day of shooting and editing. I want to say the PA's (1 full-day, 1 half-day) alone were about $250 of that...and one of them did little more than make sure that were were properly stocked with breakfast, lunch, and snacks. The talent was on contract for us already and I want to say that the photographer's cut was about $3K. This was 10 years ago.

That would be lovely :)

Like I said I thought I did a reasonable job, but maybe more $250 than $10k :)

From the examples you posted, I would say your work is quite good and very much worth the 700 - 900 range.

$250 for a half day? Welcome to 1970.

Maybe more 700 - 1000.

But the question is what would you charge and I would charge what I mentioned in # 4. That is what I charge.
