Quick question for the A7/r users - when using focus peaking with an auto aperture lens, does the camera stop down the lens to accurately reflect DoF? The related question is: how well does FP work with stopped down manual lenses? Is it easy to reach a light threshold where the camera just doesn't want to play that game anymore?

Not sure I understand the question correctly but Sony A7r allows you two types of focusing (changeable in menu), it can focus wide open and then go back to your selected aperture (alike DSLRs usually focus) or it can focus at the precise aperture you choose. The benefit of type 1 focusing (which i use) is that it is easier for a camera to focus since it gathers more light in. The benefit of type 2 focusing is What-you-see-on-display-is-what-you-get in terms of exposure.

Cool, thanks - that's what I was looking for.

And I believe the camera is setup for the second method by default. What you see in the evf is how it will look after the shutter is released. I prefer this method myself. That way I can apply some EC if needed. This works even with auto iso.

and thats why I prefer electronic viewfinder, I had cases with 5DIII when I accidently either changed exposure or some other setting and picture didn't come out the way I wanted.

Why is it that every time I see a photo and say, "ooh, I really like the combination of sharpness, micro-contrast and color balance (not in this photo, but often enough the list will also include bokeh and the transition from sharp to oof areas)" it turns out to be a Zeiss? I don't know if I should be happy or sad about that.

That's how I got hooked on Zeiss. It's something that just really resonates with some (and not others). And my Zeiss lenses hooked me on the a7 and a7R - I think it's the absolute best camera for shooting Canon-mount (or Nikon-mount) Zeiss lenses. :)

In this instance the Otus 55mm was used. Even by Zeiss standards the Otus in a different league in terms of sharpness and contrast. I've never been a huge fan of "normal lenses", but Otus is so dogone amazing it's been changing my perspective a bit.

So my new battery came in today...the battery that came with the new camera was a defect. New battery works fine, I can charge the camera now and turn it on. Woo hoo, now I can use my a7r this weekend with my L lenses.

Finally i placed an order for FE 55mm and also Metabones adapter[III] today, just i have to wait long time because the shipping will take long time, maybe longer than 1 week, also i ordered a charger with 2 batteries and hope they are good and not defective and no issues after long time use.

I can't wait to start using this camera, now the only thing i need is a plate to place this camera on the tripod.

ISO Test and comparison at 6400

first of all they're both in auto white balance. same lens(canon 85mm) same aperture at 4.5.

the color on the A7R is spot on. my walls are really that green in that particular room. it reflects on the computer and wood as well. the 5D's(back to factory settings) auto white balance is reddish.

Canon never had a good white balance... in doors and other "tricky" places.
