Just sold the a7R... definitely want to pull the trigger on an a7S soon. They have one in stock at a Best Buy about an hour away from my house... I'm really tempted to drive out there and get it

50MP sensor is nuts... i'll keep my 1DX with it's 18 and my a7 with it's 24mp

I totally agree. Work on noise control, autofocus speed, fps, etc. 50MP is simply dumb!!

50MP is not "dumb".

50MP is not not dumb at all... but "dumb" for me.... i hate it when people use the excuse of "Cropping their images for Extra Large Prints... lol meanwhile back in the 90's people were printing out SUPER large prints with a canon 5d... (mki) what was that 10 MP?

It all depends on your preferences regarding sharpness and viewing distance. A few months ago I ordered a large print (60cm by 40cm) of a picture which I cropped slightly (about 17-17.5MP left after cropping). I also applied sharpening before sending it in. At my preferred viewing distance, sharpness was about just right. A 10 or 12MP file would not have been enough for me.

Well said. I like it when we talk about gear in terms of the right fit for ourselves rather than blanket statements that unavoidably cast aspersions on those that may have entirely different needs and aspirations. If we call a product "dumb" then what may be said of those who are excited about, and who desire to purchase it? There is a rather inescapable castigating linkage.

For my part, the product I most desire right now is the mere 12MP a7S. As you suggest, David, that is still quite a fine resolution that can make beautiful prints. :)

With the Sigma 50mm f1.4. The zoom in focus thingy works with the metabones IV adapter :).

These are the best stills pics I've seen yet from the A7S. Most of them are way too soft for my taste. Are you doing anything special in post besides sharpening to get them workable? Is this your main stills camera?

My workhorse is a 5D mk III for my nightclub/bar work as it is built like a brick s**t house.
The A7s is my video goto but also my holiday/travel light go to as it does not weight 2.6kg like my gripped 5D with a lens!

I do selective sharpening in LR and manual focus with the fancy zoom focus feature using the sigma 50mm f1.4 for those.
I find manual focus, using a good exposure (maybe half to 1 stop over) has helped me get the sharpness I want.

I'm missing this camera already... still hoping I'll see a low price to grab on an a7S. I might try renting the a7ii for an upcoming team photo shoot this month and see if it'll be enough for me in regards to low light performance and shutter sound... but I'm betting the extra size/weight alone will break the deal for me. I just can't bring myself to open my wallet for the a7S yet though... why's it gotta be the most expensive of all of them dang it!

If the A7R wasn't good enough regarding high ISO performance, then the A7II won't be either. I believe there is a saying which goes like this:

Buy the best and only cry once.
