Still a bit noisy, especially in the sky but I really like the color tones of the shot. Nice find and shot.

I didnt find it so bad because technically the shot is great. Composition, the lighting and so...

not bad but i expect it to be more clean coming from A7S. not your fault. Just looking at how the A7S perform.A resampled 36mp might yeld the same result at the same ISO level.

I do believe there has been a little too much hype about the ISO capabilities of the camera.
It may be a stop or two better, but when a 36MP image is downsized to the 12MP native, the A7s does come out on top IMHO.

The camera is a video camera at the end of the day. It has a 4k resolution for the exact purpose of recording 4k footage.
With that in mind, the larger photo-sites just naturally lend themselves to being a little better at signal:noise....maybe be a couple of stops and maybe a stop after downsizing to a comparative 12MP from say a 5D mk III (the other camera I own).

I bought it because I wanted something COMPLEMENTARY to my 5d mk III that shot video, was compact and just played differently.
It is exactly what I got I am happy with it.

If you want to shoot ONLY still photos, then yeah, dont mess about with the A7s and just buy an A7r and then you have crazy resolution in regular light and still very acceptable ISO noise in mid-low light.
For the sake of 1 stop ISO advantage...I dunno.

As for sky, it always brings out noise more...I dunno why.

Here it is at 25,600....(1 2/3 stop higher).

I do not know why, but I will accept that shot of the University building was noisier in the sky than the above shot at ISO 25,600.
This is probably because the very light polluted sky was close to the exposure of the buildings, giving little contrast in the image and no "real blacks". When collapsed, like in the 25,600 image above, the shadows are clean. Like really clean.
As for middle greys, unless collapsed from a more overs-exposed shot, they tend to have a little more noise than I would like.

The A7s is shot 2 stops over in s-log2...maybe this has something to do with it...Then again...I can not comment.

Sorry to go on, but here is another at the same (ISO 8000) taken in the light polluted city centre again.

I have added a grain to it, but still, there is a noticeable noise in the sky at ISO 8000. Noise is always in shadows. Unless I really upped the contrast on it, that noise will be there.
Sure I can photoshop in a graduated filter, but what is the fun in that?

In my somewhat experience related conclusion

Positives
1. The A7s is an awesome little camera with a maybe 1-2 stop advantage in low light if you are exporting photos no larger than 4k.
2. It is a video god for its size. Pack the Shogun 4k recorder on it and you have 1080p 60fps, 4k 24fps with 14 stops of latitude.
3. The dynamic range at low ISOs is awesome. I mean awesome. It easily puts out 13 stops at ISO 100. About a stop more than the 5D mk III.
Over ISO 6400, it pulls away from the Canon 5D mk III by over 2 stops Dynamic Range advantage. This is why it is a low light camera. That noise in the shadows? It is only there because the sensor can see detail in those shadows. On the 5D III, they will be clipped.

4. It is tiny. Seriously. These mirror-less things are a dream for a run and gun camera for my hobby and also my video work. I could not be arsed running around wit my 5D III all day with a 24-70mm strapped on it if it were like a family/friend day out. I would and have...but I would much rather it be the A7s.

Negatives

1. Lenses. Yeah there are adapters and such...but I want a 40mm f2 pancake, a 35mm f1.4 that is the kinda same compactness (which may be physically impossible...but I still want it. Canon FD 50mm 1.4 is tiny...smaller than the modern f1.8 so I do not see why this is an issue imho).
2. 12MP. You want more than an A3 print? Forget it. For wall art it is more than enough unless you want to wall paper a wall with it.
3. It feels a bit plastic on the buttons. It just isn't built like the Mg-Al alloy of the 5D III youd expect for a £2,000+ camera. I would not want to be doing my events and night-life work with it. I would wear it out in 6 weeks.
4. Just the menu system. For the love of god.

PS. Yeah, 12.5 stops at ISO 320:

White snow, direct sunlight but can still make out the branches in the trees and the strands of hair in the sheep's black fur? All captured in one frame. It is a winner in my eyes.

The advantage at ISOs over 6400 for the dynamic range is even greater, I have done some late night lurking with the 5D but I take the A7s over it every time now.

oh so sometimes it depends on the scene huh. i don't know how sensor works. it's just strange for non tech people like me. On that second 25,600 ISO shot, it's awesome though. That's already the max ISO of the A7R. hehe

thanks, been shooting with my minimal kit, and its been great, past few times, been leaving the DSLR at home for landscapes (I typically bring 2 cameras, however the hike was somewhat strenuous).

And two more in colors to show how the A7s handles lowlight colors:

Note: the second pic here was shot in almost complete darkness!
