Hey guys. I am considering getting rid of my 5dc and 5d2 to buy a Sony A7 to use with my Canon Lenses. My main form of photography is Automotive Portraits, Glamour, Fashion and Family. My main concern is with the autofocus during continuous (AI Servo). The closest I get to sports photography is taking rolling shots of the cars I am hired to shoot. Most are in low light and at low shutter speeds. Will the Sony A7 be able to auto focus with my 17-40L in decent conditions. Here are some of my examples shot with my 5dc, 5d2 or 7D.

And in general how decent does it auto focus in low light conditions? Also do they make eTTL lighting triggers for this body? Thanks for all the advice guys.

uhh, you dont get this camera to AF. generally, the focus of canon lenses is like your 5D2 in live view.... or slower.

with native lenses, it's pretty fast even in low light. with canons, i can't use it. manual focus is a breeze though with the focus peaking. it's weakness is the first thing i tested when i rented one.

i highly suggest to rent one from borrowlenses with the metabones mark iii adaptor. they have both. that's what i did before switching from 5D Mark III.

oh oh Sony A7 has faster AF than A7R but maybe only in native lenses. if you want to compare AF speed with a native lens and canon, rent the zeiss 55mm f1.8 as well or the 35mm zeiss.

goodluck. hope it helps.

So how are you liking the a7r as compared to the 5d3?

as a dual owner, I like both for different type of work. The A7r is a great 2nd body.

for me, i like the A7R more. i have more in focus(manual) shots now than with the 5D. shot the moon like 10 times with A7R, all were in focus. with 5D Mark III i'll get like 5/10 even in sturdy manfrotto tripod.

when i rented i have a paid shoot and i got 24/24 in focus shots.

Well, i didn't use my A7R much yet, only once, but with my TS-E24II which is manual on any camera anyway, i loved it on Sony more than on my 1DX, so this camera will be my main camera for landscapes/nightscapes/architecture/cityscape if i shoot still subjects, i will use 1DX only or mostly for moving subjects like sports/birds/wildlife/street-life....etc.

The LCD viewing with this camera is way way cooler than using the viewfinder of Canon/Hasselblad, even the live-view on 1DX is not that much amazing compared to the Sony one, this is my experience, but ofcourse, i didn't buy this A7R for crazy clean high ISO over 3200 or rocket AF speed or fps, i bought this camera for higher mp so i can use it for still photography at base ISO or lower ISO values.

Ok so is there an ultra wide angle lens yet that is native to the sony a7r? But yea Id really only need auto focus during my rolling shots. Everything else I can use the focus peaking ability to manual focus. I owned an NEX camera and the focus peaking ability was definitely cool. I guess I need to rent one lol...

When you rent one, you don't wanna return it. Be warned! Lol. Rent a metabones iii and a native lens to compare.

Borrow it 3 days on wednesday, return will be monday. So you have 5 days total.

Great shots!

agree. nice shots and preset.

Thanks guys! One last one with a different preset. Again with the FE 55.

Funny enough went to try some of these presets on older pics taken with the T2i ... was floored at the difference in just the image quality alone between the T2i and A7R. Forgot how blown away I was a month ago when I opened my first few A7R files in lightroom. There is simply no point in holding on to my old gear. For sale!!
