Surely one of the oldest sports known, Jousting is still a competitive sport taken very seriously.

The object is simple, hold a Lance while riding on Horse back and attempt to smash Lance on an opponents shield while they ride at you and try and do the same.

Of course its all done while wearing full plate armour.

The Opponents start each round with a "measuring run" where they charge past each other, but no contact is made:

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/Moppie/jousting6.jpg

IMAGE: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v31/Moppie/jousting5.jpg

And then the Contact passes begin, each contest is made up of 3 passes, with points being awarded for how much damage is done to the Lance when it hits the shield. It must hit the shield to get points, and hitting a horse is instant forfit.

This is how it should be done:

or:

This is how not to do it:

Of course the last 2ft of the Lance is made out of a Balsa wood tip with a cross cut into so it breaks into nice pieces.

The Horses absolutly love it to, and require a lot of work to stop them running to early.

Shooting it was a real challange, although I was limited by my gear, it was a beautiful bright sunny day, and the action was just close enough that I could capture it.
There were a few officals who got in the way of some potential really great shots though.
I had to use manual focus for most of these, and manual exposure as well, just to cut down on shutter lag from the camera. And being able to only shoot 3 frames per sec was a bit limiting as well.

Those are some great shots! I was quite surprized to hear what the rules really were from Scott, do you know if it has always been like that, and if the "knock the other guy off" is just a Hollywood thing?

That guy in the second photo looks like someone you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley!

I guess it depends on who's side your on :)

I over heard one of the Jousters talking to someone in the crowd, and by the sound of it knocking the rider of the Horse has been considered bad sportsmanship for a long, long time. Its always been a gentlemans sport.

Cool shots. I like the "hats" the horses are wearing.

I really enjoyed looking at your photos, Moppie, and reading your descriptions. These guys look very serious about their sport. It must have been a fun shoot getting these images: well done! :-)

Very colorful & an interesting subject! It looks like you had a great opportunity to get something different there & I'll bet that you have some ideas for next year, right?

Men, testosterone, and sportsmanship only last a little while together...in time one of them has to go...LOL

Cool shots. I love seeing this on TV, of course it is always over glamorized as every thing else on TV, but cool none the less....

How many contestants showed up for these when you went?

I think there were 7 Kiwis, 4 Ausies, 3 Americans and 1 Canadian.
It was the International championship :)

One of the Americans was Women , she's the one taking the knock to the head in the last photo.

Great stuff Moppie, it must have been a great day.

"One of the Americans was Women , she's the one taking the knock to the head in the last photo." I wonder if her head is still ringing?

Perhaps they'll make a movie, could call it "Brokeback Camelot"

I doubt it Pete, in the 'old days' wasn't there a maiden as a prize for the winning Lancelot, if so, it would have been, to quote the old saying, a matter of "non circum coitus"
