So i thought that I was mechanically competent enough to take apart a lens to fix the zoom ring problem that is very common with them, but apparently I was wrong. When putting it back together, I realized that the "ribbon" under the lens mount was detached. It is pictured below, the best I could get it:

What do you guys/girls think? Is it easily fixed or should I just sell it for parts?
Thanks in advance!

Why not send it in to Tamron? 6 year warranty. How old is this lens? I just bought a 17-50 non vc about a month ago and was unaware I any common problems.

Anything is fixable. You have to know how to solder well to fix that. Like I said, Tamron had a 6 year warranty.

Unless he swaps out the PCB unit.

It all depends on the cost factor IMO.

looking at the broken tracks I'd say it's borked - they're probably too thin to repair by a human. Tamron techs would just replace the PCB (and giggle while they did it...) and then write up the job-card with the cost of parts & labour.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I agree theoretically. There is a guy I know that has fixed boards and tracks on motherboards. It's amazing to watch. Again, I'm wondering how old the lens is, they come with 6 year warranties.

For me it sounds like the cable defect was probably caused by the repair?
So I think no longer a warranty repair.

So you tore it? What were you trying to fix? How old is the lens?

No, I don´t have the lens. But from the post No.1 description and image it looks a bit like it was torn from the board during dissassembly.

I like to disassemble and modify manual prime lenses, but not AF zoom lenses.

I purchased the lens in 2009 and it was used when I bought it. No telling how old it really is.
A common problem with this lens is the zoom ring wobble that eventually makes the lens unzoomable.

That is affirmative. I imagine warranty would not cover this repair.

I am getting the feeling that this will not be an easily repairable problem. Is my best bet to sell the lens for parts and find something better?

Is this problem still happening on the new 17-50 non vc models? Just bought a brand new one. Never heard of this.
