How do I get the grid to show up when looking through the viewfinder?

In some cameras you replace the focusing screen.
In some cameras you set "Display grid" to ON.
In some cameras you can't.

At least 4 weeks ago you were shooting a 60D so based on its manual, pg. 157, go into menu, chose the 4th icon from the left. Display grid is 2nd item in the list.

Learn to use the manual...

You are refering the OP to the Live View grid...

@OP: I believe that you have to get a different focusing screen called Ef-D (user installed)

Assuming you are using a 60D, if you want a grid in the viewfinder you have to buy an "EF-D" focus screen (external link) and install it. Note that if you install this, there's a custom function that needs to be set to match (this corrects for slight skewing of the meter due to the focus screen).

Turning "display grid" on in the menu only enables it on the rear LCD screen, when using Live View.

Only the Canon cameras with active matrix/transmissive LCD focus screens have "grid on demand" in the viewfinder: 7D, 5D Mark III, 1DX and 70D.
