CS2 is obviously the most feature-rich, but if you can get a good deal on CS, you're not missing much in CS2. I'd stay away from anything prior to CS.

CS is great and I still use version 7 if i have to (on my lap top) dont forget to check out Paint shop pro also, Ive never used it but people who have it say they can do everything that those with PS can do.. might be worth looking into.

The version of Photoshop CS2 in Creative Suite 2 is the same as the standalone verison of Photoshop CS2. GoLive CS2 is a web design program.

Creative Suite 2 gives you several Adobe applications bundled together. Creative Suite 2 Premium, which I have, is Photoshop CS2 (with ImageReady CS2, Bridge and the usual bits and pieces supplied with Photoshop CS2), Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, Version Cue CS2, GoLive CS2 and Acrobat 7 Professional. Creative Suite 2 Standard omits GoLive and Acrobat. I can't remember whether Version Cue CS2 is supplied with standalone Photoshop CS2 or not.

In essence, though there's some blurring between the applications - Photoshop is for bitmap graphics such as photographs, Illustrator is for vector graphics, InDesign is for DTP. GoLive is a web design program, and Acrobat is Acrobat (if you've used it, you'll know what I mean!).
