I have a T4i and recently bought an used 85 1.8 . It seemed ok but I noticed that I get back focusing when shooting close up to 10 ft and severe front focusing on at least 50% of my shots when I shoot at longer distances (15-20 ft)
I have made several tests using tripod and it shows that my camera has back focusing issues - I tested it with two other copies of the 85 1.8 , one 100 2.8 Macro and one 50 1.4 and at 3-4 ft there is about half an inch focus shift or even more. What bothers me is that when shooting with the 85 1.8 I'm getting severe front focusing at longer distances. Do you think it might be the lens playing tricks on me - the camera has warranty and I hope they fix the back focusing.

I've had my T4i over 18 months and have used a bunch of different lenses on it; including two copies of the 85mm f/1.8

I've never experienced anything but superbly accurate AF. Assuming it is not you/technique and results are similar on multiple lenses, I would question the camera.

Heya,

Might be the camera at this point, if every lens is essentially not focusing right.

Warranty it.

Very best,

I think it's both the lens and the camera... the lens mostly
I rented another 85 1.8 and it was much better - I actually could live with that much backfocus, but it seems there is a problem with my copy so the problem gets multiplied. It's not my technique - I'm dead on almost everytime with the af point on the face/eyes of the subject depending on distance and usually click the shutter as soon as it focuses, which is instant on this lens.
I think I will have to send them in both. I wonder how long would it take them to fix it and the cost of it, since the lens is out of warranty.

I had a t4i for over a year and never ran into that. I hope it is a quick and relatively cheap fix for you.

Well, cheap is relative. I just hope they admit the camera has a problem and fix it. As for the lens - I hope it just needs some software adjustment, which is about 100$. Still better than buying a new lens I guess.
