For wedding shoots inside and without flash I use raw as my safety net. I still utilize custom white balance and try to get the shots right the first time, but in real tough lighting it is comforting to know that I have more versatility relative to pp adjustments using raw files.

First of all: Raw records the photo in 16 bits so it effectively records twice as much information as .jpg is 8 bits. Naturally, this is very important in regards to the detail captured.

Actually, most digital cameras record a maximum of 12 bits per channel per pixel giving 4096 different levels per channel. At 8 bits per channel for JPEG there are 256 different levels (this is digital so each bit is another power of 2). So, you are effectively capturing 16 times as much information (4 extra bits = 2x2x2x2=16).

I know my RAW files are 16 bits and you're right about how much more data. That's from a 20D of course. I don't know about the other cameras.

Now I've done it! I've confused myself.

I went to the Canon web site and it says that it's always 12 bits, both RAW and .jpg.

So, I need to understand why the RAW file is 16 bits and the .jpg is 8 bits. Is the RAW file upped to 16 bits in the camera or what?

Anybody?

What I saw for the 20D on the Canon site was "Image Format : JPEG and RAW (12-bit)", which shows the RAW as 12-bit, not both the JPEG and RAW.

Here's a couple of links that can explain this for you better than I can - the first from The Luminous Landscape (external link) and the second from Ron Bigelow (external link). Another great source of information is Bruce Fraser's book Real World Camera Raw with Photoshop CS2 (external link).

I have the book "Camera Raw" and hopefully, I'll have enough nerve to shoot RAW this week with my 20D and 1gb card. I'm doing baby portraits. Got to love those beauties. :)
