Shooting sports for a high school I work for. Parents are asking to buy prints. My pricing is set, but the question I had is: should I watermark the images, or no? The watermark I use is just a copyright line that I put on in the lower left corner of my images. Yea, I've heard all of the pros/cons of watermarks, so save that for another day. I just want to know of I should include it on printed images I sell.

Thanks.

No. Can't think of a reason you would.

When I was shooting for myself, I did not watermark delivered prints on the image side. I did have my copyright information printed by the lab on the back.

The only time I would consider watermarking prints is if I was giving them out for free as advertising. Usually that was framed prints I gave out to hang in bars/salons/etc.

No. watermarks are there to stop people using our images without permission. You put them on samples that you post online/facebook etc. Someone who buys a print has permission and shouldn't have to look at your "advert".

Of course watermarking is different from signing. Some photographers sign their work - even then it is usually on the border around the image.

Why not ad the backsite from the print?

From a customers viewpoint, I would not want a watermark on a print that I had purchased.
I have put company name in text on spare white space on a photobooth print though.

I can't really think of a reason other than an extreme bout of ego why you would watermark a photograph of someone's kid they are paying you for. As suggested, put your contact details on a sticker on the back, and supply an extra sticker for the back of a frame, if it's being framed.

Thanks for the replies. I was assuming not putting it there, but wanted to see what the general consensus was. I will do it on the backside though.

thanks again....

Watermark - big, ugly, usually over main image areas. It's only purpose is to prevent theft. Don't ever watermark prints you sell.

Signature - In a unobtrusive corner of the image, a border or on the back. Although it does help prevent theft, it's intent is more like a credit line and some quiet advertising. Signatures have been on photos forever. Most customers will not object to an appropriate signature on a print. Using them is your choice. I usually don't but I often sign the back or advertise there.
