After doing a fair bit of trolling the net and asking for advice on here, i have just ordered a Canon 400mm f5.6.
Mounted on my 7d or 60d i am looking forward to it arriving in 3 to 5 working days, then some decent weather to get out and try it.

It's great to go from 300mm that bit further lets you fill the frame that much easier. Canon 1Ds3 | 16-35/4 | 50/1.8 | 135/2

Feb 28, 2014 10:44 | #4 I dont know if youve had other telephotos or what you upgraded to the 400 5.6 from but all i can say is prepare for a sharp and amazingly fast af. I love this lens!!! Great for BIF and other birds and wildlife especially with your 7d crop factor. I have borrowed a 100-400 in the past for wildlife and found i was using it at 400mm all the time so going to a 400mm prime was the obvious choice. All the reviews i have read have been very good, so cant wait to take delivery of if. Did you find the IS useful in any way? Kel

After carrying the 500 around, the 400 5.6 is soooo nice to carry on hikes with! It will not go anywhere soon! Robert

'Trolling' is one of those words like queer whose use has been historically misappropriated for various reasons. To troll can also mean to 'systematically search an area for something', which presumably is the sense the OP had in mind? EOS 7D MkII

I have a canon 1.4x TC but as others have stated it wont auto focus with it attached, but i have also read a comment saying it will AF at f5.6 with the TC ? Time will tell. I think i will probably go down the same route as you suggest, shoot at 400mm then crop to suit, but for more static wildlife i will use the TC and just manual focus. Keep us posted on how you are getting on with yours. Those people were most likely referring to this combo on a 1D series body, or the 5D III (the only Canon digital bodies with f/8 AF). Kel
