It looks as if it hasn't been used. The seller is asking $800 firm. Sigma website shows the suggested retail at $899. Is it worth the risk of no warranty for a little over a $100? What would you guys do? Thanks for any input.

I have it, and I love it. I bought mine used for $800 as well. It retails for $999 at Henry's on sale so $800 is a good savings over retail.

The guy I bought mine from said he would send it in for warranty for me if it ever needed it too, as it has 4 years left on it still. (Must be original purchaser, I think)

I have taken some great shots with it. It is QUITE heavy though. If you are going to handhold it all day, update your gym membership. :)

Preferred Weapons:

FWIW... And I really am not trying to sell you mine as I'd much prefer to sell it local and would prefer not having to ship it to BC (unless you have a 15-85 to trade!), but I'm selling my very good copy for $675 OBO.

You can get them new now for $899 just about anywhere. So $800 used, even for a minty copy, seems a little much to me?

Yes, $800 seems a bit over-priced to me.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

i'd ask the seller if he has the original receipt, and where he bought it...if he's got a receipt from an authorized seller, and includes it in the sale(or a copy) than you should be able to still have the warranty on the lens

with this lens a lot of times it seems like the used market isn't really out there much...if the lens also sells for more in BC than it does here it may be worth it...but for US pricing, i'd think that is a bit high

Yup... The Tamron really doesn't bring anything to the table over my Sigma from 150 to 500, but, you know, it goes to six!

I looked at it today, and I don't think it has been used, looks absolutely new. The person that bought it died and the sister is selling it. I'm thinking it may be a grey market purchase as it has a Gentec International 10 yr warranty card with it. But no receipt!
Thanks for all input, it is very helpful.

Pfft,

I would get it new at that price. The 150-500 is a budget telephoto lens as far as the super telephotos go. The 50-500 is the better one, and costs more. For $900 new, you should get it absolutely new. You're not saving anything getting it for $100 off.

I'd only buy it if it were like $600 used.

Very best,

Very bad deal I purchased mine on E-Bay for a tad over $600.

I got mine years ago new for $1000. Though I really like it, used (anything not from a store) I wouldn't pay more than $700 for it.

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

I had the 150-500 and sold it for about $600. I think $800 is too high for used, even if rarely used, still not new, and no warranty. Instead, I'd throw $300 more in the pot (if you can) and get the Tamron 150-600. I always felt that the Sigma was a little soft, especially at 400-500 range. What I've seen of the Tamron, it seems to have better IQ than the 150-500, and 100mm more reach. Just my 2 cents.

All I want is just a little more than I'll ever have.

Used at $800 or new at $899. The $99 gets you 4-year warranty, at least in the States.

For the small difference in price I would go with the new one, and get the warranty.

When used price is that close to new then I'd expect it to be local and you can test to check it's sharpness and AF on your body before purchasing.
