I just posted a review of a mom-light I bought a few weeks ago. It is the 600WS, lithium battery powered, wireless mono-light from Nice Photographic Products in China. The kit sells for about $350 or so depending on the model.

Here is the feature set:

LED modeling light
5.5 lbs.
320 full power shots on a full battery
6-hour recharge
5500K +/- 200K
variable power output
sync terminal
attachable handle
stand mount adaptor

Synopsis of the review: This is a very straight forward and easy to use monolight. It has a multi channel selector for the the low profile wireless module. It has a 5W LED modeling light, this is much brighter than you might think. There is a diffusion panel that comes with the reflector for a softer direct light. I found the recycling time to be reasonable at full power and quite fast at anything under half power.

This unit uses a knob to vary the power. It is not easy to find accurate increments, say from 1/4 power to 1/16th. It is best to use a flash meter and play with the adjustment.. I have no done a full field test with it yet, but the color looks right on.

My biggest concern is that there is no US distributor so service would require a return to China I suppose. As I just got it there is no way I can estimate its longevity. I'm taking the approach that for under $300 for a 600WS unit, it is an expensive disposable strobe if it dies on me.

There are lots of pictures posted on the review. Go to www.foto-gizmo.blogspot.com (external link) if you are interested.

Yeesh that is cheap.

a 600Ws light, with associated power supply to handle that load, and then a LiOn battery to power it.. for 350USD is amazingly cheap.. so cheap I'd start to worry about things like OVP, THermal protection, safety, emissions etc.

is it certified by any of the regulatory agencies?

I'll be interested to see the color consistency on such a device, and what light modifiers are available for it.

Dave, I think I remember reading somewhere that it is the same company.

Jim, according to the manual it does have overheating protection.

They list optional accessories such as a beauty dish, soft box and snoot, but my guess is they would have to be ordered direct. I did drop an email to them, if anything happens, I'll post it.

Here it is. Size restrictions on the forum force me to post this small photo, but the color fidelity is constant and it is accurate as well. The exposures were made at the recycle beep.

If you want something like that with a US vendor, you might want to check this. Probably the original concept or creator, as well.

This has a US distributor, sold in B&H. The thing is, way more expensive.

I checked the B&H web site, they list some Priolite items and then it says "item not for sale" under it.
