Hi Doc,
This essay has been posted in other forums, but you're probably right. You're also right about the methodology of these home tests. They're not accurate and the results mean very little. One can't be sure that the camera is at the correct angle or, for that matter, that the lens is pointed precisely at the focus mark. A few millimeters or a few degrees one way or the other render the results useless. Under these conditions anyone can find a problem even when there is none.
As I said yesterday, I think this is an internet forum generated disease. The cure is using your fine Canon gear the way it was intended. If, after enough time of actually taking pictures, you think there's a problem, have it checked out. But you're not going to determine that by taking pictures of test charts on your kitchen table. Good luck.

Well you might not believe the testing of the chart I put up.
But as I was testing it out that night everything I focused on was really not in focus what was infront was.
I never realized this cause I didnt know it was doing it before. now I know its plain as day.
I took pictures of buttons on my remote control and every button i focused on was not infocus the button infront of it was.
I focused on my dogs eyes and then more towards hid snout was the focus area. The lens was def out and I already sent it back to canon.

Runner,
Good luck. Here's a thread you might want to check out :

I'm certainly not an engineer, but I believe they need the camera body to do any kind of lens calibration. Only going on what I've been told, without the body, they've been known to simply check the lens for any obvious defects and ship it back. Maybe someone else could chime in on this that's been through the process.Hope things go well.

But I dont get why my kit lens is dead on focus with everything I shoot and was almost dead on that chart. but the 50mm is way off

Well - i have a new 70-200 f4 and posted a pic on a tread in here yesterday. We where all ( most of us ) agree that it was something wrong with my lens regarding too AF.
Today i took it too the service office fr CAnon here - and was allowed too watch the serviice engineer test my lens.
He had a jigg where he put the camera with lens on .- and checked it for front and rear focus. Deadly accurate both. So he put my lens on a 1D and shott at test sheet - did the same with my lens on my 20 D. Exactly the same. Then he took a 85 f1,8 and did the same thing again on both cameras. deadly sharp all the way. Then i took my 20D with my lens on it - and shot a few pics inside the room - with 430 speedlight. Sharp as h---.
Of course i was happy nothing was wrong - so i went home and shot what i shot yestarday. Sharp.
Thats it. I have decided not too worry about it anymore. Shot 250 + pictures - and if i am happy then - then its ok.

Nilsen,
Your experience kind of re-enforces my position on home testing. The techies have the jiggs, computers and other gear they need to do it right.
You're right, worrying too much about this kind of stuff just gets in the way. Good luck.
