No you are not fooling around. That is as long as you eye sight is good enough.
Also using a tripod when working with very high magnifications (Larger tele lenses) is strongly recommended as any tiny shake of camera, prevent you to achieve that critical focusing.
But then for the sake of completion, if you are too objective and need to do everything is a scientific way, go do you home work on "Bahtinov Focus-Mask" or its variants such as three hole mask. They are the ultimate manual focusing methods for high end mag telescope, lens in manual mode but you need to do a bit of ingenuity with the DIY ability to make one specially if you are working with a small camera,(Not difficult at all) once you learn the technique.
And not to forget another very important point, not to change zoom or touch the lens, once critical focus is achieved (And very friendly I dare you on this
).
