If you have given a high budget to buy a lens that is wider than 20mm different than 16-35 or 17-40, let's say 14mm, so which lens are you going to buy?

I am asking between Nikon 14-24mm and Samyang/Rokinon 14mm, which one will you buy if you will use any on Canon so it will be manual anyway?

Heya,

Samyang 14mm F2.8

Sharpness. Simplicity. Price.

Very best,

Price we all agree it is so cheap, simplicity i think it is even i really don't know what is that mean, maybe you mean i use it without adapters or whatever.

SHARPNESS, this is what i really care about the most, is that Samyang 14mm sharper and better IQ than Nikon or other lenses?

From the reviews I have seen the Samyang's IQ compares very well against the Canon and Nikon 14mm primes. It's main negatives are heavy moustache distortion, and flare resistance. I think the original, non-UMC version was a touch sharper from memory but was even worse for flare than the newer, multi-coated version. I quite like the copy I have: nice and sharp.

I'd go for the Nikon if I had the money. Zoom over prime for me when it comes to UWA.

Very limited poll - I voted "other". I already have it covered with my Canon 10-22 - no interest in even researching anything else. I have no need of f2.8 in that focal length.

I am willing to bet that the OP is asking for FF options. While the OP has in his list crop cameras, I will gather he used his FFs more often. A 14mm on a FF is wider FOV than a 10mm on a crop.

If I had your lenses and was given the budget, I'd go with the Nikon. Reason I think it is better and what Sirrith said (I'd rather a zoom).

But I didn't vote. For me I don't typically shoot ultrawide as often as other types of shots. You have the 16-35L, I have the 17-40L. While I look for an excellent priced 16-35 to upgrade to (for the few times times I need f2.8 on an UWA shot), I figure I will wait to see if Canon will bring their own 12-24mm (and to see what it will cost if they do).

(For now) If I need wider than 17, I do have my Sigma 10-20. I've kept it to use with my crop camera, and on FF with a 1.4X. On a FF it does adequate enough for me if I want 14mm (which I haven't yet). The 10-20 is a slow 14-24 with the 1.4 attached. Significantly wider FOV with the TC on a FF, than a when it is used bare on a crop camera.

As I said of your two lens choices, I'd go the Nikon. If I had to vote, I'd go other. If I was to go manual focus, I'd rather go TS-E 17mm (using your statement of high budget). Based on my real budget (and wanting to wait), I'd go Samyang 14mm (or for me possibly the Sigma 15mm Diagonal Fisheye).

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim

Yes, i only look for FF compatible lens, i have 10-22 already, i also have Sigma 12-24mm mark1, so that i wrote other as not much options there i know could be listed.

Well, i am looking for IQ and sharpness more than price/weight, i am different guy than many of you, price and weight is no effect with me, i accept any lens price or weight as long it gives me better sharpness and IQ over my another cheaper lighter lenses.

I can buy that Samyang/Rokinon anytime easy, but i don't want to go with this lens if i will buy TS-E17mm later, and maybe then i feel this 14mm is not as sharp as 17mm, this will force me to look again on Nikon 14-24mm or Zeiss ones, so that i posted 14mm and 14-24mm on poll and asked if the budget is not an issue.

I don't think either the Nikon 14-24 or the Samyang will compare to the 17 TS-E. Since you're considering the 14-24, why not just go straight to the 17 TS-E as it is in the same relative price range. Idk, if you really need 14mm, the price is right on the Samyang. I don't think I'd spend the money for the 14-24 unless you have a Nikon FX body to use it on.

True, in fact i am planning to buy Sony A7R, i was thinking about D800E against A7R, sure if i go with D800E then i only buy 14-24mm, but i like TS lenses, and if i will get 17mm then definitely i have to go with A7R, then i have to think if i want wider than 16/17mm, i will see for how long i can use 17mm and never look back for 14mm or wider than 16mm.

I am really amazed how those Canon TS lenses so sharp and amazing, and with tilt/shift option i don't think any lens can come close, i was thinking about a bonus lens wider than 17mm if i will get 17mm, just in future i may think to add wider lens than my 16mm zoom lens or better IQ than my siggy 12-24mm, can't wait to get 17mm and if there is another budget i may think about another lens that Canon/Nikon may produce in the future at UWA FL.

I own both and have used both and tested both on a 5d2 extensively. Price aside
Samyang:
smaller and lighter
Much less flare prone, much,
Much less CA (hardly any) though this is mostly correctible.
ACR profile available to autocorrect distortion
Sharper in the corner wide open, until about f5.6.
dont have to fuss with an adaptor, with all the potential issues (decentering) that it can produce.

Nikon
Zoom, useful
Slightly better microcontrast, if its not ruined by flare.
slightly shaper corner to corner at f8.
Far less distortion, though less easy to correct.

If you are looking primarily at 14mm, its a no brainer. Samyang is the better choice. Flare issues with Nikon are pretty bad, and the the sun does not have to be even in the field. samyang has exceptional sharpness by any standard. Nikon is legendary, b/c it matches the sharpness of best primes in its range, and its a zoom.
Edit
If you are using it on a7r, not sure if acr profile is available, but at least with samyang you wont have to worry about an adapter. with nikon you do
However, again, nikon is a zoom, and there is great utility to that. Fred of Fredmiranda fame is using the a7r extensively with his adapted canon TS lenses and seems to be very happy. I think its an excellent choice as a camera if autofocus is not an issue to you, and you want to continue to use your canon lenses.

I think i have to buy 17mm and A7R first then later will see if i will go with Samyang over Nikon zoom, who knows, maybe a new lens will come that will be in UWA side and it will be very sharp and nice IQ.

I own the Samyang 14mm, and it is defective (external link) because of low build quality.
In case I have enough money for the lens, I would buy the Zeiss Distagon 15mm :-)
