I may end up picking up a local 300mm 2.8 IS V1. go big or go home right.

Put a 1.4x on it and you would have over 400mm and still be faster than the other options you are looking at.

Don't think that focal length would always work for him......

I'm actually trying to locate a new old 120-300 2.8 OS right now. IF I can find one from authorized dealer for a good price then I'll just jump on it.

I'd suggest you to buy a used lens. That way you'll lose less (if any) money. If you buy new to sell used you end up losing more.
I don't think there's many tammies on the used market yet.

Maybe a used 50D (1.6 crop) + a 1.4x converter with your 70-200. Cheap option that might get you there.

there's a used OS that lensrentals is selling off for $1855...it is rated a 7.5 by them though, i'm not sure how bad that means it is:

they're also selling off their 200-500mm for a paltry $14,995...a savings of nearly 45%...that'd give you the reach :)

Warning, it may not be just for 2 months, I picked up a Sigma 300 2.8 mainly for nighttime football (and the Canon 400 2.8 mkII was waaaaay out of budget), added a 1.4 TC to it not long after, and it's been used with or without the TC in basketball, gymnastics, football, birding, volleyball, planes at airshows, and portraiture. The compressions and the bokeh quickly become addicting and you may not be keen on selling it after just two months.

The 300/2.8 is a nice lens. But earlier you said the 70-300 wasn't enough reach, and going by your example I'd agree. Do you plan to couple that with a 1.4X (extra $) or have you found a way to get closer?

Also, your daughter is young and will probably be involved in cheer or other outdoors sports for many years. I would be inclined to buy and keep a long lens instead of spending $200 every year for the next 10 years and deal with the hassle, effort and uncertainty of buying, selling and re-buying each year. Surely there are other opportunities to use such a lens in between, infrequent as they might be, to offset the up-front costs.

But if you do wind up selling in 2 months, is it too early for me to call dibs? :-D

I'm meeting a guy tomorrow to buy a 300mm 2.8 IS V1. Yes you can have first dibs in 2 months. I do not want to keep it any longer than this. May sell it after a month. Who knows.

1. I want to try it out
2. I pray I don't want to keep it
3. I may sleep with it

lol. Seriously though I'm buying my old 2x kenko back off my friend who bought it from me so I'll have either 300 or 600. That kenko was pretty darn sharp and just took one click down to be awesome. I need to look for a 1.4 now.

So looks like my decision has been made. Looks like in 2 months I'll have a 300 for sale (prays this holds true)

My buddy who is a cps member is getting one on loan. He'll have it april 2nd. so I should get a day of seat time with it. We both think it'll be perfect for his kids baseball/football but he's worried about the F4 (most his kids games are night)

I wanna try it out then run away from it lol
