My buddy who is a cps member is getting one on loan. He'll have it april 2nd. so I should get a day of seat time with it. We both think it'll be perfect for his kids baseball/football but he's worried about the F4 (most his kids games are night)

I wanna try it out then run away from it lol

Ironically, I've found kids night time football lighting to generally be better than indoor venues. Most of the fields can easily be found at night from miles away by following the alien glow in the dark, far surpassing the (inevitable) nearby mall/shopping-center lights.

I suggest you be rightly concerned about testing that 200-400. I think that between shooting the 300/2.8 + 1.4X one stop down for sharpness and the 200-400, you're going to be buying another expensive piece of glass.

So now I'm sitting here and getting very excited and freaking out at the same time.

Picking up the 300mm 2.8 IS V1 tonight! but I'm worried that I can't give it up when I'm done and I'm in no position right now to keep it for longer than a few months :/

Maybe I need to pass? ugh. so indecisive!

Talley - if your buddy lets you use it , have him ask about buying it . Loaners are a little cheaper than refurbs - most oh time

The 300 f/2.8L IS is a hard lens to part with. Had mine 2007-2013. Still miss it at times.
The trouble with a lens like that is unless you are rolling in dough, you need to use it a LOT to justify the purchase.

Agreed. And I'm not. But I feel pretty confident that I can use it for two months then sell it and walk away with a minimal loss and have a rental thats cheaper than what I could actually rent for.

$3400 is what I've struck the deal on and includes everything and a lenscoat and the only marks on the lens itself is from underneath the tripod mount where you can't see it when the tripod mount is on. Looks from the photos to be a very well taken care of lens but tonight I will see for sure.

Believe me this idea here has me on edge... the price is not something to just throw around. I did buy the canon 24-70 & 70-200 MK2's but decided to sell them as I'm more of a cost concerned type of guy.

Word of advice : don't think you will be able to sell any of the lenses once you have a taste of it. Its a losing proposition.

haha true. I did sell the both canon MK2's to keep my Tamron's though even though the Canon lenses were better. I can have self control like that.

The other reason I'm going through with this is so I can try the lens for myself. My friend has the Sigma 120-300 OS (nonSport) and we want to compare the canon to it. He may sell me his Sigma which I really want and he buy this Canon which he probably will want more.

He is such a freak to absolute sharpness so I think I can win his awesome copy Sigma 120-300 over for $2k and he buy this :)

Not sure what they go for where you are but the non-sport is $2189 new here (in stores) and used goes for around $1500 I believe (though I rarely see them on the used market). But if his is the sharpest he's ever used/you've ever seen and you know it functions perfectly then it isn't a horrible deal. I skipped the 120-300 because the non-sport seem to have too many issues and I would use it with a 2x TC most of the time and it doesn't have much advantage over the Tamron 150-600 in that regard (besides the AF issues with the Tamron).

Based on your example in the OP, you better get a 2x TC to go with the 300/2.8...

I shot a 300/2.8 IS v1 about 5 months ago (on my 60D)..RC planes. I also used my 300/4L IS, and the only difference other than the weight, was the extra stop. Sharpness, AF, color/contrast, etc. were the same. Was still nice to use though. I really wanted to use her new lens, the 400/2.8IS II, but felt lucky enough that she let me use her backup hockey-lens. :D My bad shoulder (at the time) would have really hurt then.

It made me appreciate my cheap/light 300 though.
