Yeah. I'm sure technique is a huge part of it.
Maybe I also used the wrong terminology. Soft isn't exactly the word.
I guess the reach was not far enough to resolve the facial features of the surfers?
You can see what I mean in the above shots. They're not really OOF or "soft". But after cropping, there's a bit of lack of detail in the faces.
Anyway. More practice is needed. Regardless.

But yeah, most of my shots came out fairly soft (not unusable, mind you).

But compare Butchie's crisp shot above to this. Sequence (which is also quite a bit cropped).

It definitely helps if you can get close enough to not need to crop, at that last motorcycle race I was filling the frame quite well when shooting from the locations I used the 300 + 2x. I wish I had shot with the combo more but I was worried about getting OOF shots as my 2x III(never had issues with the II) often extreme back focuses when shooting at focus distances near ∞

Great perspective. Better check your lens hood for skid marks though.

A buddy of mine stopped by to visit on the way back to Arizona this morning. This was shot in low light so the iso was 6400 using the Sony 24-70. No flash used.

Hahaha, more like front element since I don't bother with the hood on the 17-40, however on this day it might have been useful with skateboard passing within feet of it.
