whatever it is, great vantage point.

Thanks very much, yes from the pier.

This is only my second or third time shooting surfing, so I've gotta attribute the results to the Canon 400 f5/6 lens. It seems to love action shots, esp. with the 7D. The autofocus systems seem to work beautifully together.

^ Good stuff, Mike... You may want to shoot above 1/800sec to really get the stop action sequence... Overall a good series... Keep'em coming... Anyhoo... Uno from moi with the BOYS on Saturday morning...

Looks like you managed great after the parking incident. All great shots. I especially love this one.
I really need to get out to Griffith one of these days.

Thanks, I appreciate the tip, I believe these are mainly at 1/400 and I was wondering what you experts shoot at. I'm mainly doing motorsports and generally shoot 1/160 or a bit up or down from there, because I'm panning. So, a different ballgame entirely - this surf action is sure fun though, great sea air, moderate temps and you can't beat the BIF's :)

Here's one more, from the day:

More from Pelican Cove.

When we got there, it looked pretty gloomy. Like so:

You're really nailing these, Joe. Looks like you're getting sharper detail than what I was getting. How cropped are these?

I'm dying to go out and play with the 100-400, so let me know if you think of where to go tomorrow night. I wouldn't mind coming out for a shoot.

they are at least 25% cropped on most of them. On Sunday since I was a tad bit closer, I had to crop less which is always nice. Ill try to put up a comparison tonight.

Hey Mike... I can only speak for myself, but I usually start at 1/1250sec and work my way up depending on how much light is available... Obviously, if it's sunny and bright I can push the shutter speed 1/2000sec and above... But if the lighting sucks (cloudy/gloomy) then I try not to go below 1/800sec and adjust accordingly with my ISO levels... Again, I'm only speaking for myself... I'm sure Pat and the other fellas have different settings all together...

:D

1/1250 F6.3 ISO200-400 was what I was at most of the day thanks to some tips from Pat. I dropped to 1/1000 at one point but went back to 1250 and just bumped the ISO and that kept them sharp it seemed. I wish my body did some half steps in the ISO dept. It will do it in auto ISO but not in manual. 300 or 350 would have been nice.

edit: just remember that these will change with whatever lens you have as well as TCs, etc.

I think I was shooting at 1000-1250 for the most part on Saturday (after a tip from Butch). I adjusted my ISO accordingly at first (I think it ended up around 400 for the most part) and then let it be for the rest of the day.
