I just checked my 100-400 does not auto focus with the Canon 2X III

That's because with the 2x extender, the max aperture would be f11 so no autofocus...even if mounted on a 1D series camera.

You would need a non-reporting TC for it to focus, and even then, focus was be pretty slow and not terribly reliable unless you have really good light.

You'll need at least a 1D(something) body or a 5D3 for it to focus with a reporting 1.4x (making it f/8 and limited to center focus only).

I can verify that my 1D-series bodies have AF capabilities with stacked Kenko TC's... It's not 'hummingbird' fast, but pretty damn quick... And still locks on target, even with outer AF points... Good light helps, but I was still able to lock on to surfers during overcast conditions...

I like it.

Met up with Joe at Bolsa Chica for a bit after work. Going through the pics right now. We'll see how well I did handholding and tracking BIFs...

I like what you did there, Joe. And the B/W treatment works very well for this repeating pattern theme.
I saw you setting this up as I was leaving and almost got back out of the car to try at it myself, hehehe. Good eye, sir.

Great shots everyone! Here's some of mine tonite. Dean didn't want to play with me so I went off on my own, LOL.

Arch Rock. Might try this with my zoom next time.

Great stuff. Is this Pedro? Bolsa Chica was sort of a bust. 280mm is just not long enough there. Gonna have to wait until I have a bit more reach to head back.

Fabulous shots! Where is this!? Next time, I'm going there!
Bolsa was alright, but even 400 is not long enough. At least not where those birds were tonight.

^^ Corona Del Mar. I didn't get out of the office til after 6, so it was about 7 when I got here. I was telling Joe I'll probably never own a big prime (by choice) and my interest is landscape anyway. We should meet up, I know you shoot near here.

Huh. I've shot Corona Del mar many times and don't recall these particular rocks. Did you hike down the other side of it?

Here's some of my Bolsa stuff...
