thanks, was really hoping I would figure out some nice vantage points, but that was pretty much a fail. Big bear's got a lot of potential, but I havent got the slightest clue on good vantage points, and was there for kid activities.

Sweet photos! For some unknown reason.. I thought there would be more snow there by now. Hope you and the fam bam had a good time up there. We're planning to go at least one more time... gonna strap the kids up in snowboards for their first time and roll them down some black diamond slopes. Low center of gravity. They should be fine...

I hope. :D

Patches here and there, may visit again early next year. Kids got car sick and threw up on the way home..... I hate the drive.

I won't snowboard till the kids are teens, the tubes were great.

Hehe.. Sorry to hear about your kids heaving on the drive down. That was the main reason why my wife and I waited until their bed time before coming down the mountain. We figured they can't get sick if they're both sound asleep. Of course, that meant for a late drive home.

LOL about the above comment about me...

Charlie, love the brenizer shot. I have Big Bear on the my list to hit up this winter. But as you said, the drive sucks. I tend to get car sick easily and have hated doing that drive in the past...

I got a little car sick myself, and I was driving. After my youngest threw up, there was a combo effect, the next youngest threw up, then the next kid, then my wife was about to throw up too lol. We stopped at one of the turn off points for a little fresh air, luckily my youngest figured it was best inside my wife's hat , the other kids didnt go in the car, and were throwing up outside. When we were ready to drive again, everyone had a bag in hand..... and about two miles later, we reached the botton :-P

night time driving may be a really good idea, but I didnt do it, seems a little sketchy.

I really want to go back to shoot some stuff. On the initial way there, there was fog from the melting ice that made for a really nice mountain view. Would make great photos. A long lens for birding would be great too. Nice looking birds there.

I don't know if you've ever tried it and it's a longer drive but I think going to Big Bear the back way is a bit easier on the stomach. This way is to stay on the 10 Fwy east to Redlands then onto highway 38 through Mentone and on up to Big Bear.

Great series Charlie! We had a house in the family which was on the lake, unfortunately it was sold last year so we have not been up since. The drive always got my kids sick, the back way as Gene notes is less twisty after you get through Forrest Falls and you avoid the ski resort traffic but it also takes 15-30 minutes longer due to going through Redlands and has more rock slide closures in the winter. Best bet, take it slow, stop a few times to look at the views and eat ginger snaps. If that does not work go with Bonine.

This is my first time at the site with the new look, can't say I'm a huge fan of the changes, but like anything will need to get used to it.

thanks, any insight on the hwy 18 path? seems a lot closer than the 38, which is a good 40 minutes further.

I guess the other solution would be to turn on a movie for the kids and make multiple stops for some photo ops. Some really great vistas around there.

I've taken the 18 and 38 several times and taking the 18 my daughter gets car sick, but on the 38 everyone makes it up there fine. It is a little longer but it a much less windy drive. Its actually a very nice drive too.
