Yeah. I'd like to know as well. You just point the camera at the sky and let it go for 30 seconds? :)

how do you take these without a tracker?

The idea is to use a fast lens...but mine was only f4...and to use an iso high enough if needed to keep the exposure time under 30 secs to avoid streaking caused by earths rotation. For my example, I was at f4, iso 1600 and shutter speed of 20 sec. using my 17-40 lens.

live in the desert ;)

too much city lights around here to work. On a side note, star trails do work in the city, but not very well. Something super wide and fast helps. 14mm samyang F2.8 on FF or 8mm fisheye on crop.

Pretty much...as long as you're on a tripod. On a clear night, you'll be able to see the milky way with your un aided eyes. I would also highly recommend a remote trigger release and a small flashlight in case you need/want to change settings. If possible, use a flashlight with a red lens, that way, you don't mess up your night vision for several minutes whenever you use it. Trial and error plays a role here too of course. :D

Those kinds of settings puts my T2i out. iso 1600 on the T2i looks like a sandstorm. I guess I could randomly throw in some color to the sand. haahaa

Do you have a faster lens than f4? You could cut down your iso that way.

So the 24-105 at f/4 or the 28mm at 1.8 should do nicely....The latter being the easier one to just plug and play.

Hey Charlie, you have the 6D. Did you get a spare battery for yours? If so, did you go Canon or third party?

I also bought 3rd party. Stk (or Sterilink?) from Amazon. Both read properly in camera and hold the charge well.

Nothing spectacular but the 6D and high ISO for stars works very well.

thats pretty good. I think I am in need of a new body for high ISO stuff as I seem to keep running into a need/want for it more and more. The T2i is just no good for high ISO.

Puckman: cant wait to see what you come back with.

I know the feeling, had crazy itch to shoot, so I stopped by my wife's garden plot.... Finally some clouds in the air. Too bad they were too slow and my 10 stopper was not enough.

quite pleased with the performance, I didnt even white balance the photo.

10 stop haida + 0.9 GND SE 30 second exposure. The top right corner did darken a little too much, and so I had to correct it a bit. Could have been the angle of the shot, sun was top left .
