Folks (I feel silly for asking), how the heck do I open a raw file (70d)? my CS5 does not recognize it (ran updates to adobe with no success), my windows live photo gallery does not open them>???

Brand new camera, and I am very excited to see some photos on the computer!!!

I guess I will rephrase my question;

Is there a way to view the CR2 files out of the 70d using the default windows photo gallery?

You can't open 70D raw files with CS5. You'll have to download the latest Adobe Camera RAW and use it to convert the CR2 files to DNG. Or use Digital Photo Professional.

Very easy to use the dpp pro to see all raw thumbnails and to process them. And its free.

You can always use Lightroom, I use LR5 regularly to convert the files to dng and throw it in PS if nessecary.

Download the FREE Adobe DNG Converter (from here) (external link) software and convert to .dng format, which retains all of the Canon RAW data, but will allow you to process the image in an older version of ACR. Or you could upgrade to Lightroom, it's the cheapest upgrade for the full RAW functionality, which would also give you the benefit of being able to use the new much improved Process Version 2012.

This^^^^

But I would keep the original CR2 files to enable you to process them in DPP or in a later version of ACR/Lightroom if/when you upgrade.

Problem may be that Microsoft hasn't updated this to include newer camera models (like the new 70D)

Well I installed Adobe DNG converter, and it seems to work great! I wish there was a solution to preview files fast (IE large thumbnails the open in windows photo gallery), but I am not complaining.

Still looking for the fast preview solution.

Thanks for ALL the input folks, much appreciated.

Leon
