Nope. 70D isn't included in this version of the codec pack. I'm sure an update will be out soon though.

I guess I will rephrase my question;

Is there a way to view the CR2 files out of the 70d using the default windows photo gallery?

Don't be so quick to write off DPP, I use it to switch my CR2 images out of camera to TIFF files Photoshop will recognise. It takes seconds only.

Glad you can at least use them now. LR 5 is reasonably affordable (with a pretty solid feature set) if you get tired of converting.

Well I installed Adobe DNG converter, and it seems to work great! I wish there was a solution to preview files fast (IE large thumbnails the open in windows photo gallery), but I am not complaining.

Still looking for the fast preview solution.

Thanks for ALL the input folks, much appreciated.

Leon

I've used the free Adobe DNG converter for over a year to open the files from my 6D in Photoshop 5.0 ACR. It takes a few moments longer, but is much better than the cost of an Upgrade to the Cloud or that restrictive Lightroom filing system. Also much better then DPP from Canon. You picked the correct option in MHO!

Try THIS ONE (external link) out for size. I like it a lot.

Personally I'd say invest in Lightroom.
It's not too expensive either.

One again dpp has a file system viewer that shows thumbnails of all the files including raw.

To view your RAW files in Windows Explorer, get FastPictureViewer software (external link). It cost all of $15 US the last time I looked, and well worth it. You'll be able to see your images as large and extra large icons, right in any Explorer window. It will not only handle Canon CR2, but also any other manufacturers' RAW files you throw at it (I've used it for Nikon, Olympus and Pentax files, in addition to Canon). It will also allow you to preview the files larger in Windows Picture Viewer... but be forewarned, that's not a color calibrated software so RAW files tend to look pretty bad.

The last time I looked, the free Canon codec to view RAW files in Windows Explorer only worked on 32 bit systems... not on 64 bit versions.

To convert your images, you could update to CS6, but I might simply suggest getting the latest version of Lightroom instead. It's much faster and better for cataloging, keywording, organizing and batch processing your images than what's built into CS5. You can do a lot of the basic image adjustments (cropping, overall image exposure, color, saturation, contrast and more) in Lightroom, prior to conversion... then pass off directly to CS5 for finishing, noise reduction, and final sharpening. LR and PS really complement each other well. LR costs about $150 US for a standalone copy.

Adobe is pushing a cloud based version of LR and PS now ("CC"). I'm really reluctant to "lease" my software with monthly charges, even though their one-year introductory rate has dropped from $20 a month for PS CC alone to $15, and then to $10, and now to both PS and LR for $10 a month. I'm guess they are having some resistance to the idea of leasing software. D'oh!

As you've seen, you also have option to convert your RAW files to DNGs, Adobe's standard "digital negatives". That's free and relatively easy. I haven't used it but have heard good things about it (no "sidecar" files, but those have been eliminated in later versions of Adobe RAW via LR and PS, anyway).

Another relatively inexpensive way to do the RAW conversions is with Adobe Elements... which is about $100 US or less and has some features of PS and some features of LR, sort of "lite" versions of each of the bigger programs. It also can convert to files that CS5 can deal with, though.

Canon went to Digic 5 in the 70D and in the process they changed the format of the camera's RAW output. I quickly found out that Essentials 10 wouldn't open them and that I needed to upgrade the Camera RAW plugin to at least ACR 8.2, which was not an available upgrade for PSE 10. So, I upgraded to PSE 12, since it showed as having ACR8. I assumed it was all that was necessary. As I stated, 8.2 is necessary, but that upgrade is (or was, anyway) not available for PSE 12. I ended up having to do a manual upgrade to ACR 8.3 and now everything works fine. You may end up having to do the same thing.
