Any suggestions on a canon camera for underwater?

I believe the D20 & D30 are the only Canon cameras that are underwater ready without the need for a housing.
How deep do you want to shoot and are you looking to add additional flash?

I generally shot at about 40 to 50 feet and yes a flash would be great.

I bought a used G11 and the Canon housing for it a few years ago, and it has served me well. Just recently upgraded with an Ikelite DS-51 strobe, which has really made the photos much better. Anything in the G series should be relatively inexpensive for the camera + housing. When you get into DSLR housings, the prices are sometimes higher than the camera itself!

I've used a G11 with the underwater housing which was fine but there's nothing better than to get your dslr underwater with strobes to the side.

I would suggest going with the Ikelite housing route, and adding the ds-51 strobe as mentioned. S120 and G1X II, G16 all perform well underwater.

If you're serious though, as with anything, a DSLR is the way to go. At that point, then you're talking about ds160 strobes (2 of them) or ds161's if you like video.

I recently found someone selling an Ikelite housing for a 7D on FM and picked it up. I had an S100 and Canon underwater housing before that had served me well for snorkeling in Maui, but the zoom/speed of a true DSLR is tough to beat. Before you buy a separate camera only for underwater, do some recon work into what a quality housing for your existing camera will cost, it might be worth a try.
