For 2 years now I've been taking pics with a T3i and had no trouble opening CR2 files in ACR/CS6. When I open a RAW file in ACR, it says "CAMERA RAW 7.0 - CANON EOS REBEL T3i" at the top of the window. I do my editing, then the pic opens in CS6...no problem.

Yesterday I got a 6D, and when I try to open a RAW file in ACR, I get a message that says "Photoshop cannot open this file: If you're attempting to open a RAW file from a digital camera, make sure you have the latest Camera Raw updates installed via HELP > UPDATES... If the problem persists, please visit the following link for more information: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html"

When I click the link, it says I need ACR 7.3 installed for the 6D. When I try to update through HELP in CS6, the update option isn't highlighted for me to click on it. Is there another way to update ACR 7.0 to 7.3 without going through CS6?

GRRRRR!!!!

Thanks,

~Ace

Try updating through the Adobe Application Manager or Bridge/Help/Updates. The latest for CS6 is ACR8.3.

I found a direct download for you if the automatic way continues to not work.

Windows and Mac versions are available and also the CC (Creative Cloud) versions available. ACR 8.3 (edit March 11, 2016: newer versions available through link below)

You will have to scroll down the page a little ways to get to the links.

>>>click (external link) <<< (edit: Plenty of info/links in the blog about keeping PS and PS CC up to date)

Also, for anyone interested, Adobe Labs has a pre-release candidate of ACR 8.4 available for download >>here (external link)<<. (link is no longer valid, -pointless with ACR 9.4 for CC 2015 and ACR 9.1.1 for Bridge/PS CS6)

Thanks a TON!! I couldn't update through CS6 for some reason, and I couldn't find anything on Adobe's site. Creative Cloud was the key. I didn't have it installed, and once I DL'd it, everything updated (ACR 8.3).

Thanks again!!!!

Hmm,...that's interesting! That explains why I seen some Creative Cloud screen/window pop up on my screen the other day after installing CS6 from disk. After installing I upgraded to the latest patches through the help menu with no problems. It seems Adobe wants it's users tied to their cloud in more than one way or another!

So, just to clarify, did you download ACR 8.3 through the link posted? Or was it CS6 CC download from a different link?

I clicked the link and downloaded the zip, but when I tried to extract/run, it told me I had to have the Cloud installed. I installed the cloud, then a box instantly popped up telling me I had a CS6 update ready to install. Once it installed, ACR listed 8.3 and said Canon EOS 6D at the top.

...edited to say, the update option in CS6's help menu is still unlit.

Wow, seems crazy Adobe would have us install the Cloud, but glad you have it now!

In your CS6 Edit/Preferences/Plug-ins section, do you have a check in the box for: "Allow Extensions to connect to the Internet"? I suspect this might have been the problem. When you hover your mouse over that line, you will see why. But I could be totally wrong!

OK, this all doesn't sound right...

First, I really don't think you need Cloud to get a good update of Camera Raw.

When you say the CS6 Help/Update menu option is "unlit", are you referring to accessing help via the PS editor, or via Adobe Bridge? It's Adobe Bridge that you want to use, via the Help/Updates menu.

I'm not sure about the Adobe Cloud thing...it might cause you problems if you don't intend to become a cloud "subscriber", but I don't know how that would work with this type of upgrade!

Yeah, it is checked, and so is "Load extension panels"

I'm talking about the top of the PS screen, far right tab...Help>>Updates. I launch Bridge while in PS, but never use it by itself. I don't see a preferences tab for Bridge (at the bottom of my PS screen).

From within Bridge your Preferences should be under Edit/Preferences, you can also call them up using ctl k.

That's the Mini Bridge in PS. Dennis is talking about launching Bridge separately by itself.

I know you got it sorted out but it's still strange your update button is not working properly.

@ Tonylong: It seems, for some(like me), Adobe isn't making things very clear about our update options anymore. Just from my poking around, I'm under the impression that users will have to have that Creative Cloud Desktop App installed just to get the proper updates to work properly. IDK, I could be totally wrong though!

FWIW, after doing some digging around Adobe's web site, I finally found some info. It appears that Adobe will automatically update the Adobe Application Manager to the new CC Desktop App and run it in the background.

IMAGE: http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/pp49/dougle/POTN/AdobeCC_appScreen.jpg

Well, I didn't download a product, unless an update is considered a product. But, Application Manager was probably running, so it got updated I suspect.

The date of the folder creation shows about the time I used the update function after installing PS.

Seems like an unnecessary way for Adobe to get the "CC foot" in my door.
I guess it would be easy access to CC if I ever wanted to go that route.

If you start the full/stand-alone Bridge app, then as was said Preferences can be found under Edit, as can Camera Raw Preferences, and then you can also do Camera Raw updates using Help/Updates.

I've always had Bridge set up as a desktop icon, so any PS re-install just keeps it there. When I want to use Photoshop without going through Lightroom to Edit in Photoshop, for example, if I want to open a Raw file in Camera Raw, to me opening Bridge as my file browser and then using one of the approaches to open a Raw file in Camera Raw works well!

And, as said, you need the full Bridge open to get the Help/Updates functional.

If for some reason you don't have a Bridge icon on your desktop, well, if it were me I'd fix that right away!:)

Hmmm...I'm running Adobe Master Collection CS6 and I don't have any problems updating any of my applications using the Adobe Application Manager accessed via Adobe Bridge (Help > Updates).

I just checked and my version of Adobe Application Manager is 7.0.0.68. I recall that about a year ago Adobe updated AAM and renamed it to Creative Cloud Desktop App. I installed the CC Desktop app when it was first pushed by Adobe but it did screwy things; fortunately I make nightly backups of my System drive so I was able to restore the drive to the status before the update. And as you can see from this post other people complained about the change: Why did I get Creative Cloud...I didn't ask for it? (external link)

As a test I download the ACR update posted in the previous link and it installed without any problems. Based on my experience I'd advise anyone to stay away from the CC Desktop App unless you actually have the CC versions of Adobe software on your computer.

Thanks for the link PixelMagic! Interesting to know there was a problem with this a long time ago.
I knew CS6 had a lot of bugs but no idea there were as many one user pointed out in that thread!
I personally don't have a problem with CC DT App, I just turned it off in the tray and am going to prevent it from loading at startup. I do have a problem with Adobe not being clear about updates for their stand-alone at home products vs. their cloud products.
It took me forever to find those links with ACR8.3 download. They sure aren't listed on Adobe's update page. I think if Adobe would just rename the CC Desktop App for their home products or left it alone to begin with, there would have been less confusion.
I think it's just marketing strategy to give home users easy and quick access to the cloud if they want to opt in.
