Although he escaped the tag, he was called out for leaving his feet. Still made for a cool sequence of shots!

Called out for leaving his feet? Is that a new rule or one specific to this league? Some of our minor ball has a "slide or avoid" rule to avoid collisions and this looks like a perfect "avoid" situation!

He was kinder on the catcher than Pete Rose was.

Thanks for the kudos.
regarding the ruling…I guess I was not aware of that…depends on what level of play the league is in. This was a Jr College game.
If memory serves me correctly, I think I've seen a similar play before and a similar ruling.
EIther way…can't take good action shots w/o good action, right? :-)

I was curious and had a look through the rules for NCAA baseball, and cannot find anything that pertains to diving over the catcher, except making contact above the waist:

Section 7(2): (2) The runner may not attempt to dislodge the ball from the fielder. Contact
above the waist shall be judged by the umpire as an attempt by the runner
to dislodge the ball

A bit more from section 7: If the defensive player blocks the base (plate) or base line with clear possession
of the ball, the runner may make contact, slide into or make contact with a fielder
as long as the runner is making a legitimate attempt to reach the base (plate).
Contact above the waist that was initiated by the base runner shall not be judged
as an attempt to reach the base or plate.

Still no clear rule on diving over the catcher.

As far as I am concerned, it is an attempt to avoid contact, and as no contact was made on this play (that I can see) he should have been safe....no?

Anyway you interpret the rules, it is a FANTASTIC series and well captured!

thanks for sharing!

Excellent series!!

Strange ruling... I'm curious of it's source since it doesn't come from the NCAA.
