Pictures with borders

What is the reason for printing a photo with a white border. I understand 1/4 inch around because a mat will cover it. But I have seen videos about printing and settings and when they hold up a photo, it will have a 1 inch or 2 inch white border. If that picture is framed, won't you see this white border? Is that what they want people to see? I don't understand the reason or what they are trying to achieve with this wide white border.

It used to be standard for prints to be bordered. Then, in the 60s, machine printing took over and borders disappeared.

Prints with borders leave room to handle the print without touching the image area. I also think it's a more classic, elegant look. Most home/small output printers (inkjets) print better if you leave a border making it necessary to trim borders off after the print is made.
