I'm debating whether or not I should purchase this item, or if Photoshop can give me the same effect. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I am pretty sure that experts with Photoshop can do about anything, but I am not that good, so I just bought the Lee system. I figure if Matt Kloskowski (who I think knows Photoshop) is using the Lee system then it might be a good thing for me to use too.

That was my thinking as well... and I too am not that great with PS. A couple of my friends suggested I purchase an older version of PS and create the effect in post. Seems like too much work if you ask me. lol

I guess you could blur things in PS but I'm not sure it would be convincing so I'm going to say no, you can't do it in PS.

However the Lee system is not the only approach. I use a 77mm screw-in system with an 8 stop Formatt filter. It cost about $100 - quite a bit less than the Lee system (about $400 I think) and works great.

There are two filter effects that are virtually impossible to duplicate in PhotoShop - long exposures from ND filters and polarizing filters. You could fake a long exposure in some cases by cloning out the distractions; you could stack multiple shorter exposures to get the streaking and blurring of a long exposure, but if your time is worth anything to you, buying the filter is going to be cheaper. And it would take even more PhotoShop effort to "eliminate" glare off of glass, plastic or the like, letting you see what's inside, which a polarizer does; more so if the glass or plastic is curved.

I was given a big stopper for Christmas and have used it once, due to time constraints. However the one time I did use it, I was blown away, I've been dying to use it, maybe this weekend!

Thanks for the feedback everyone, it was most helpful. I'm going to take your advice and get the filter. :)

Buy it, it is really a fun to use it, and just look at the results without Photoshop, then you can save your time on Photoshop for filters effects, and i also think that there are things can't be done perfectly or exactly on Photoshop that filters can do, so don't depend on Photoshop for everything you shoot and don't try to get it right from camera in sites.

^Gorgeous shots Chris!

A big stopper is not something that can very easily replicate in Photoshop. Here is my attempt at a fake Photoshop long exposure. It probably doesn't look that believeable, but I do like the overall look lends to the image. But, faking a long exposure with a telephoto lens photo is a lot easier than with a wide angle lens simply because of the perspective lines of convergence.

I have a Lee Big Stopper and want to really put it to use this year. To that end, I also bought a Promote Control, which lets me better automate the long exposure capture for > 30 second exposures - it can even do long exposure bracketing.
