Hi,

I tried googling this and reading through the nascar threads here but couldn't find any definitive answer. Does anyone know if Las Vegas Speedway, specifically the Nascar race there this weekend, prohibits specific camera equipement? ("pro" cameras, detacheable lenses, monopods, camera bags, etc.)

It seems some tracks do not allow bags, some do not allow monopods, but it appears most allow "pro" cameras, though some just one lens... etc., all confusing.

I do not have any special pass. I'll just be in the stands.

Thanks! :)

In the stands there isn't much room to store (or use) a lot of gear. Zoom lens should be good, just don't inconvenience your neighbors. I have taken a messenger bag into the Neon Garage area and never been bothered. Security will check it when you enter the grandstand.

Canon T3i gripped, 5D III,
Canon 17-55 f2.8, 24-105 f4 IS, 70-200L f4, 100-400L f4.5-5.6.
Tamron 18-270 f3.5-6.3, Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 Canon 2x Extender III

it will also very from security guard to security guard. The best bet forme has been give it a go. If they say no, go to another gate. about 50% of the time I get let in.

Have a copy of the policy from their website printed in your bag. If they give you a hard time about something that isn't specifically forbidden you may have some hope of going over the head of the security person.
Some years ago, at a military airshow, a guard at the entrance took it upon himself to ban long lenses. Photographers had a long walk back to their cars to secure their equipment. Some didn't have that option as they had arrived by public transportation.
Eventually someone with a cellphone and the number to the right office at the base was able to get in touch with the officer in charge and the ban was overturned - too late for some people but better late than never.

Hmmm I'll definitely keep this in mind. Thanks

At LVMS this weekend they just looked in the bag for booze, etc. Never asked to pull out a lens to see the size. Saw lenses of all sizes, nobody got hassled.

yup... basically what happened to me. went in with a monopod strapped to my belt and a camera bag. walked around with a 70-300l. no problems.

thanks all for the tips.

Can we have tripods strapped to our backpack when going to NASCAR races (Richmond, Chicago...)?

At vegas they didn't seem to care at all what u had. But I think it varies depending on venue.

That said, I didn't get good pics from high up with the 7d + 70-300. I think to shoot from the top you will need much bigger lenses and I think that's about the only place you'd use a tripod. I did see some guys up there with huge lenses and tripods so I guess it works if you bring the big guns.

Also at that distance the atmospheric distortion was a big factor. I think it really made my pics much less sharp. It would be a lot better to shoot lower down (without a tripod).

I'm actually not planning on using the tripod at the race, or maybe just for larger shots (taken from the top) during sunset and at night. I'll be on a trip overseas so I can't have too much gear with me... I'm just wondering if I'll have to leave it in the car or if I can take it with me IF I want to use it at some point.

K well like i said I think it varies depending on which venue.

Since this thread is for vegas u probably will get better answers posting elsewhere.
