Thanks for this, I ordered and am starting the downloads now.

You're welcome.

I found this discount by googling (keywords: OneLight 2.0 discount). I didn't want to pre-order since I always like to wait for some reviews before buying anything and I also didn't want to pay the full price either. So the discount made me pull the trigger.

So far I'm really liking it (only watched the two gear movies yet). At first it was awkward to see the videos in black&white, but I soon realized I was less distracted because of that, which is a good thing. ;)

Bit the bullet and purchased it.

Now starting to download it. Only problem is I'm going at 400kbps so I've got quite some time before I finish :(

I figured I gained so much for OneLight 1.0, might as well bite the bullet and buy this one, I'm a fan of how Zack explains things, so at $56 bux, this seems like a steal to me. I've bought and sold a lot of gear over the years and I'll probably benefit the most out of this purchase.

This describes me exactly.

One thing I notice about Zack's approach is he sets his flash power first. And the level he sets it at seems relatively arbitrary. I think in shoot B he sets it to 1/4 for no particular "rhyme or reason" but because you just need somewhere to start. But rather than adjusting the flash power to control the exposure, he changes the aperture.

But given the option of remote power adjustment with some flashes these days (e.g. Cheetah/Godox, the new Cactus v6, PocketWizard), my preference is to control depth of field through aperture and then adjust flash output.

The Godox/Cheetah system probably wasn't as well known about when he was recording the video. But just something to consider.

...one of the things he emphasis's though is that there is "no right answer", and its one of the reasons why in the sample shoots he chooses an arbitrary flash power. He also explains in Shoot B why aperture isn't that important to him for that particular shoot: the background is so close to the subject changes to the aperture would have negligible effect.

I tend to shoot the same way: and even if I had a way of remotely adjusting the flash I probably would still shoot the same way. I know my gear so well I can walk into a room, set up the lights and click the shutter, and I'm normally pretty much got it right. Thats my preference. Everybody has their own way of doing it: and it would be impossible for Zack to demonstrate every possibility. But the point he pushes is to understand that there are multiple ways of getting to the same exposure: its a matter of understanding how your gear works and then figuring out the best way for you to get there.

That's fine. I never said the way I do it is right, either.

Yes, he said that. But I disagree with it. I think aperture does have an effect on DoF even in that shoot. And doesn't he take the same approach (changing aperture to control flash exposure) in shoot A? Haven't watched shoot C yet.

I agree. I never said he should.

...and I disagree. For the way I shoot and the way I pre-viz the images the effect on DOF in that sort of environment doesn't matter to me. It matters to you: so you choose different settings.

It doesn't really matter. He shoots the way he shoots. He explains the different options at the start of the video. The purpose of the different shoots is to show a working photographer on location making decisions and how those decisions affect the shoot. It wasn't to demonstrate the correct way of doing things, because there isn't a correct way.

The subject of one light, especially a speedlite/speedlight, cannot by its nature be exhaustive.

I like Zack. I think he's very funny, self deprecating, and an excellent teacher.

That said, I really liked disc 1 of his version 1, and as a dope, I learned quite a bit. I thought disc 2 was okay, watching him shoot, adjust his cheap softbox with one light, and get good results.

I had a feeling Version 2 would be a bit of a rehash and thought it difficult to fill up 8 hours teaching the same thing over again, and sounds to a degree I was right. I think I'd rather have a tooth extracted sans painkiller than watch 8 hours of one light. I think it would be much more valuable to show a hair light, a rim light, a background light, how to set the ratios, how to use a light meter for same.

I still have Version 1. Haven't referred to it in a long time as I think I understand the basics. I prefer free but yet excellent videos on youtube by the likes of karl taylor, etc.

Is anyone having a problem downloading the gear section ? I've been able to get everything but that one. When the gear section happened to finish downloading, when I tried to unzip the file it said the zip file was invalid.

I'm using a Win 7 box with all current updates. I find it interesting that just this section is causing me problems.

Try downloading it again. It also failed here the first time (only a part of the file was downloaded even though the download looked okay), but after a few attempts I had no problems anymore.

I have not been able to download the "wrap up" section. The link in my email doesn't work. I emailed them on 4/17 with no reply and then I emailed again yesterday to a different email address (there are two on the website) and so far I have not received a reply.

Can anyone recommend the best email to contact Zack or someone on his team?
Is the "wrap up" section something I will miss not having?
Thanks

I've finally watched all of the videos. Not everything was new to me, but I've still learned some new things. Zack is a great teacher and can be really funny. Had to laugh a lot throughout the videos. The part about karma just after the credits (external link) is a stroke of genius. :D Also, thanks to him my next flash will probably be the LumoPro LP180. That flash looks so damn good (and the side mount design is superb). Could have easily been a bulletproof weapon used by Batman.
