Am I overloading the stand?

I have a 15lb sandbag on the rear, the Profoto B1 Air mounted in the Mola Setti.

I have a much more heavy duty stand, but I like the wheels on this one.

Your bigger problem, Mark, is that peeper shooting pictures through your windows ...

But, to answer your specific question, no, you are not technically overloading that A5017 stand but that's not the same as endorsing your doing it. No one loves the A5017 any more than I do BUT for an application such as you have pictured, I would definitely use a stand with a larger footprint. An Avenger A5029, perhaps:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_Wheeled_Light_Stand.html (external link)

or a Kupo Junior Roller Stand:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com …ior_Roller_Stand_8_8.html (external link)

Those stands are heavier than your A5017 but it's not like your Mola+B1 is ever going to leave your basement anyway :-)

Thank you, sir. But as you can see, it's migrated up to the first floor of the house.

Thank you for the links. I have an Avenger stand I think I've pictured previously, but it has no wheels.

I saw in the boom thread but can't locate it right now someone posted a stand that came with a slider on it to mount a light on. Do you know which one I mean? I think it's about $250. Would that be stronger?

I have an Avenger A420 which is the prior designation of the A5029. I think that's really the stand you should be considering. Here's an old photo of mine:

The generous but not overly large footprint makes it very D600 friendly.

Do you mean this stand, Mark:

Not suitable for booming.

Yes that is exactly what I meant. Ok, no good for boom, but what stand is that? And I will get the 5029. Thank you.

Manfrotto 231B. There's also a chrome steel version, 231CS. Same price for either one strangely.

Love the 420, we used those at my last catalog job all the time! The best part (for me) is they worked just like a C-Stand, so I didn't have to think about them.

Of course, we also had 'big momma': http://www.adorama.com/BCB3521000.html (external link)

and a couple of Manfrotto 'Super-Booms'. They all worked great.

Off topic, but may be of interest to you; Ages ago (when this company shot film, 4x5) they would put a Arri mole light suspended above 4x5 view camera and use the camera to project a grid (from the ground glass) onto the table, then they would lay the wrapping paper/greeting cards onto that to get it perfectly aligned. Now they scan things like that, much easier! I have a great polaroid of the director of photography hand-holding an 11x14 view camera to take a picture of a cat on a cat-house for the catolog back in the late 80's. (Before my time, a bit!) Well, by 'hand-held' I mean 'shoulder-mounted'....

I have a hybrid of those two types of stands, i.e. the pole is a combination of the chrome and the black aluminum sections. The reason? The 231 is 8' in height. My basement studio with the drop ceiling is less than 8' high so the 231 won't fit in there. But I wanted that stand so badly so I bought one, the 231CS, and replaced one of the sections with a section from the Manfrotto heavy duty boom arm. The two sections mated together very well like they were made for each other. The stand fits very nicely in my studio with less than an inch clearance from the top of the pole to the ceiling. :)

I actually have two of the hybrid 231 stands, one is black/chrome and the other is chrome/black. :D

But, yeah, you don't want to be using a boom arm with this stand unless the arm is used as the main pole. LOL

So here's what may be another one of my dumb questions. Why don't the stands have five legs instead of 3? I saw a video that showed you need to have the boom end over a leg so it won't tip, but then the rear where the hook for sandbag is has no leg under it.

I had the same issue, Leo. The 8' 231B was too tall for my basement. I cut 1-foot off the top section with a tubing cutter and popped the end plug into the stump :-)

You just need the heavier end of the boom to be over a leg, not both ends. :) But even then, that won't guarantee that the stand won't tip over. Just depends on how much weight there is on the heavy end relative to the other end and how far the heavy end is extended out.

i bought 2 of these stands with the same problem, a quick trip to home depots plumbing dept and they used a pipe cutter to take 6" off each no charge :D

It appears you don't have a leg under your boom arm. Just sayin'.
