it was so big!

He has a sigma 120-300 2.8 OS now. He just bought it online without ever seeing it in person and had no clue how big it is haha. He just knew it's weight and how his high dollar monopod and tripod was good at handling 50lbs so he figured ah what the hell.

sheesh and I thought the 300 was big:

How has he never seen one in real life, lol? I presume that he will use it at sports events and the like (its main purpose imo) where he would have seen many photographers using them (perhaps not in the one day/night though).

LOL. Good to know he has a good monopod. :) The IS V1 is not exactly "hand holdable".

He's a hobbyist like me and takes photos of his 10yr & 6yr old boys. So he has never seen one up close or anything. This will be at the kids fields.

Ya he's crazy.

Won't mind the size at all once he sees the images from it. My favourite piece of glass.

Yes, Yes, CRAZY. Can you imagine buying that monster online from P-O-T-N without ever having seen or held one in person? And then using it to shoot kids? Crazy!

Thank dog my MMPI got lost in the mail.

He is going to get a ton of attention, with expectation that he'll be shooting all the kids and sharing the pics.

He's in IT for an oil and gas business.

He found a brand new sealed in box 400mm 2.8 IS V1 lens UX date code for $5200. Not that bad really.

And yes, he's pretty dedicated. He'll actually be selling it after this season. Kinda like I'm "Suppose" to do with my 300. However what the wife doesn't know is I cannot sell mine :D

Oh, it's possible - but not for any length of time - 10-15 seconds is about my limit before I start to move around too much - and I can only do that a few times a day.

But I get what your saying - it's a big beefy lens, and a pain to carry round, monopod is required to really use it.

I did have a photo published from a V1 IS 400 2.8 - 1/60 sec at 6400 ISO
Handheld because I had forgotten my monopod

It was of an alleged criminal being walked from the police station door into the car, for a ride to the lockup.

A word of advice too - using the big (3/8) monopod bolt can reduce the instances of a PTF (thats a "Ping" "Thud" "F***" - and normally comes before a post in the "what's the most expensive bit of gear you have damaged" thread)

The old 400 is a stunning lens, and one of my favorites, but the new lighter version is even better.
My dream 3 lens kit would be a 16-35 70-200 and 400 (along with a pair of bodies and a 1.4TC)

I've honestly never held or used anything bigger than the first gen 70-200 f2.8L IS nor seen bigger telephoto up close in person. I heard you can use the super telephoto to anchor your child in place?
