Hi All...I'm posting this on behalf of a friend who is looking to do a shoot in a poorly lit garage/warehouse with a couple of girls. I understand he's going for a a bit of a "greasemonkey" style shoot.

He'll be shooting on film and he's given me the gear that is available for him to rent to do the shoot here: http://www.dragonimage.com.au/hire.html (external link)

The lighting effect he's looking for is similar to natural lighting, but unfortunately the location he is using does not offer much if any natural light. He's planning on using some fill flash also.

I did quick checks of the stickys and also a search but didn't find anything of particular use. Any input would be appreciated, especially if referencing products available on the linked pricelist.

I would think he would want to use the largest softboxes he can find to give a look of natural light.

Canon EOS 5D | Canon T5i | Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L | Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L | Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 | Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II | Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro | Canon EF 135mm f/2.0L | Tokina 10-17mm | Canon 60mm EF-S f/2.8 | 550EX Speedlite TTL

If it was me doing the shoot, I would rent the following from that list for the warehouse shoot:
1. 2x 500Ws flash location kit
2. 2 Pro Light Stands
2. Honeycomb, Barn Doors & Gel set
3. 80x120cm Soft Box
4. 42" Silver/Gold Reflector
5. Flash Meter(Gossen)
6. Radio Flash Trigger(one channel)

The portable battery powered lights would be ideal for lighting almost anywhere in the warehouse, and the radio trigger would allow me to freely move around with less cables.

I would use 1 light with the softbox as the main.

The reflector would be aimed by a volunteer as the fill light.

The second light with barndoor would be used for backlight/rimlight, or with honeycomb & gel set for lighting the background.

Does he not have any gear of his own? How competent is he at using this kind of gear? If he is not an expert, I would keep it really simple: 1 light with stand and softbox, 1 reflector held by a volunteer, and a flash meter to get the exposures perfect.

Antonio, thanks for the detailed response. He's an experienced photographer, but not with studio flash. He has gear (ie some MF and Nikon 35mm gear and Speedlight).

He asked me for suggestions, however I've not worked with studio light myself, thus I put the question out to my PotN friends. :)

Cheers!

If he is not experienced with studio lighting, I would still suggest the 1 light and 1 silver reflector aimed by a volunteer. To start with a simple setup like that is the best way to learn.

I really like shooting with just 1 and a reflector, and I still do it very often. It is very quick to setup and move around to different locations. When Shooting like that, I also prefer to use an umbrella instead of a softbox. Again, for the same reason, it is very quick to set-up.

In a controlled studio environment, additional lights good, but when on location, less is more.
