Or just some of the battles ?? seem like Sony & Nikon and others are offering more in new features and improve AF, metering,,& IQ ??
Whats your thoughts ?
Looking to get a newer dslr,,my 40D is still very good but getting out-dated,,i have looked at the 70D & Nikon D7100 and reviewing some of the Sony cams?
Superzooms?? I have the SX50HS and like it,,but the new Nikon P600 and the new Sony look good also?

Just asking what you think

Heya,

Canon is behind in some areas in regards to cameras.

But this isn't the kind of hobby where during one or two generation cycles, you jump ship, due to not having the perceived latest & greatest. Turning this into a gear hobby, instead of focusing on the end result--the photograph--is what will have you pulling your hair out over costs and G.A.S.

Very best,

I agree with Malveaux. What I have right now gear wise, is what I'll have for several years if not more. That's not sayin I won't add a lens or body, but I have no intention of dumping everything for the latest and greatest.

It's only really DR at low ISO. They are competitive on the rest afaik.

Lot's of people saying Canon AF is the best, at least on the top-end cameras (5d3 and 1dx).

I suggest stop reading all the media surrounding all these cameras, they are marketing driven material and will do nothing to help your decision. Here is a suggestion that might help you, it has helped me in the past.

When you feel you are ready for an upgrade, you should simply outline the things you don't like, you wish you had, and where you are deficient with your current equipment. Once you have done this, you might be able to tell whether you need glass, you need a new body, you need to move to a new format, etc.

Something I do with any house I buy or build might be useful here. I keep a list of things that annoy me later, things I wish I had, etc. When its time to move (more kids, less kids, downsizing, etc), I pull out that list and bounce it against each home I look at.

I can see this being something useful here too when upgrading a camera or a lens, or the entire suite. If you just ask the general anonymous crowds on forums on what you should get, most of the time you will get answers that reflect what the members already own, some will point out alternatives, and others will tell you to switch brands or go to compacts, or whatever. Most likely you will be even more confused later after you have opened up the topic for discussion. :)

For example, if you had something like this, and added up your yeses when you were done, you might find you need glass, a newer same format body, a new brand perhaps, or a switch to a new format or smaller package.

Everyone is loosing, at least for the last two years. Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, everyone has been posting lower than expected results. From what I have read, this year too will be a bad year for camera manufacturers.

+1
I generally make a decision on what I think I really want, and throw out the idea and see the pros and cons of people that already own it.

If this was World War 2, Nikon would be Germany and Canon would be the Soviet Union. Nikon may have a few technology advantages (e.g. sensor) but Canon has many more men (i.e. their marketing budget) to throw into battle. Not sure which country Sony would be...

That actually could be good news for the consumer though for two reasons.

- In order to make numbers, they will have to push through sales/rebates, etc to sell what they already have on store shelves, this will help drive prices down on what is already great equipment out there now (ie. I can get a 1DX :))

- The companies with the strongest R&D should start to funnel more money into those departments to create better stronger improvements for future bodies down the road, so hopefully this drives more innovation, but we may not see it for about 3-5 years.

It seems to me that canon has been focusing on new lenses and cinema stuff.

This doesn't take away from the photography stuff. NOTHING is wrong with the current camera stuff.

Even when you win a war, you lose battles.
Stay the course.
Equating Nikon and and Canon to Germany and The Soviet Union.....yuch.
How about equating Nikon and Canon to Great Britain and the U.S.
