Can anyone recommend an Android compass app which will allow one to adjust for magnetic declination, and that has an inclinometer?

Heya,

I would be astounded to find a compass app that actually works well. Or maybe it's just my phone/service. :(

Very best,

Some phones manages much better than others.

Ulysse Gizmos works quite well for me.

Thanks!

I'm playing with Ulysse and a couple of other apps. Ulysse seems to be the most accurate, but I don't think it is 100%. I'm going to have to see if I can find my old (high quality) compass to do comparisons.

I'm not sure how accurate I need to be for wide field astrophotography, with a 21mm lens, and an Astrotrac. I'm trying to get everything setup to test in my heavily light polluted backyard before I drag everything out to the field. The problem is that I usually can't even see Polaris, let alone the secondary stars used for polar alignment with the scope.

There should not be any difference in accuracy, even if lots of people like to vote up or down based on that parameter. The accuracy comes from the phone - not the software. Some phones just are no good whatever program you use.

One thing to note is that you need to be careful with magnetic fields. And some phones just fails by having internal magnetic fields that disturbs the internal compass.

Great post, glad to see someone who actually understands how smart phone sensors works bw!

I never thought this app would have any other type of additional use, but it will do everything you want, plus alot more. Take time to watch the video and read the manual, obviously just ask away if you have any questions. In this type of forum we have folks that can handle making graphics, if you don't like the built in options, you can upload your own for a custom look.

The gps waypoints navigator gives lat/long and mag/true headings. This one is not free but cheap.

Clinometer gives angles but you need to test with a set square to determine the most accurate position of the android device as the device may have a slightly curved back plate. It is free.

I have had good results with these apps with my astrotrac.
