A few years ago this guy and passenger pull up at the end of my driveway and one yells out "hey want to sell that Jeep? I'll give you cash." I say "No, thanks" and they drive away. My Jeep is nothing special, it's 17 years old, no lift, mostly stock, just descent paint and wheels. And there's no "For Sale" sign anywhere.

Never though much of it until today when a women pulls up and says the same thing. I thought I'd push it a little further this time around, so I ask how much she was willing to offer. She asks, "how much do you want?". I said, "never mind, I'm not interested" figuring it's a scam of some kind. She drove a descent looking Honda, but she sounded a bit loser like with her raspy voice and looks. Now we don't live in Beverly Hills, but she was definitely not from here. The guy prior drove a beat up pickup and he too didn't look or sound so hot either.

So what's up with these people? Meth heads? Haven't they ever heard of a car lot? Is it a scam to get in your house? Is their credit so bad that this is the only way to buy a car? If so, why not pick up an Auto Trader or alike? I'm really curious if anyone else has had this happen.

I'm guessing #4 lousy credit and buying from an owner sidesteps credit checks.

They will probably write you a check. And take the keys and the car...and that check will bounce sky high.

It's an old Jeep in nice stock shape! It hasn't been modified or worked over 4 wheeling and people like that. The are simple to work on, parts are cheap and Jeeps are pretty reliable. Great car for a kid maybe... top comes off and can go off-road or through snow!

Meth heads and low-life dirtballs might like Jeeps for the same reason as you.

More than likely is they own the same model year and color as your Jeep and need a new body and/or frame due to damage. They would buy your Jeep, transfer over their parts, and either keep the spare components or sell them individually, along with any salvageable parts from their damaged rig. In most cases, if the buyer makes a good deal on the Jeep he (she) can come out even after selling the leftovers.

Maybe they just wanted to buy an old jeep. Not everything is a scam.

Indeed.
Jeeps have become even more popular in recent years btw...
Another thought, maybe someone in your neighborhood is listing their Jeep for sale on craigslist.

What kind of Jeep is it? If it's a Wrangler, old ones in decent shape are getting harder to find.

They buy it on the cheap here, then sell it in Mexico. Almost every late model car owner gets asked around here. I've been asked 3 times. One of them even came to our front door.

We see a lot of late model cars and trucks getting towed and always going south on Hwy 59.

It's my life and I'll get pissed if I want to.

This. Jeeps are different than any vehicle on the road, like a subculture. No other vehicle that has 4 wheels can compare. I mean, when you drive a honda down the road have you ever had other honda drivers wave at you

Maybe they think you're a cute fella and they're just trying to hook up. ;)
