Hey,

wondering if anyone could share their tips, experiences or links to tutorials on using/installing ML on a Canon 6D?

Thanks!

I thought about installing it, but I decided to wait for a stable version instead.

The only two features I care about are DotTune and focus peaking in playback mode.

What's DotTune?
I've been using it on my T3i withouth any issue for some time now, and really love it. I tend to favor my T3i when doing landscapes and HDR stuff, solely because of ML.
I'm dying to have it on my 6D!

DotTune is an automated way to micro-adjust AF on a compatible camera.

I've put it on my 6D. It has a few small quirks, but nothing crazy...after all it's not the official version.

I pretty much only use two features:

Focus stacking (this works pretty good!)
Focus peaking when shooting with LV.

Do you install on the SD the normal way?

I have it on mine.

I haven't found the dottune to be very reliable.

I've been playing around with dual iso on mine, and I'm pretty impressed with the feature. I also use the focus peaking, which is pretty handy when using a manual focus lens in live view.

I've been trying to understand this as well, since there are a few Magic Lantern features I'd really love to try out on my 6D (Dual ISO, intervalometer, focus peaking), but I'm reluctant to use it until I fully understand the risks and rewards. Here's what I think I've figured out so far about the status of ML on the 6D. I hope someone will correct any errors I make, because my understanding of this is very shaky.

First, the 6D is not supported by the current "stable" build of ML, because that is a couple of years old. So you'll need to use a nightly build instead.

For a period of a few months that ended very recently (February sometime), the 6D was not supported in the nightly builds. I think that this was because the developer supervising the nightly builds (a1ex) did not have a 6D to test on, and so would be releasing code that was essentially untested.

Starting about a year ago (?), the 6D was supported in a personal (but publicly available) fork of Magic Lantern, made by a dev named 1% and called Tragic Lantern. My impression is that the addition of features to the 6D was quite rapid in this fork, but the other devs were reluctant to incorporate the new code into the main nightly builds of ML. Various political fallout among the developers ensued, which I can't follow and won't comment on.

Very recently, the 6D was added back into the Magic Lantern nightly builds, and features from Tragic Lantern are being back-ported into Magic Lantern. I don't know how far they have gotten. Meanwhile, Tragic Lantern continues to be developed in parallel. I do not know which of the two is more stable, contains more features, etc.

Finally, there is a guide to installing Magic Lantern on the 6D in the following thread:
http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5530.0 (external link)

That's about all I think I understand. Anecdotal comments from people on the Magic Lantern forums are very positive about using ML on the 6D, and while various bugs and occasional crashes are reported, I haven't seen any reports of unrecoverable bricking of a 6D. The developers are clearly doing some remarkable work, and my hat is off to them.

Awesome, thanks for this!

I was doing a bunch of reading on this last night as well and was getting confused on why there was a fork on the ML site. I couldn't find where they said the the 6D was supported in ML now. For some reason the install procedure appears to be much more complicated than it is on other bodies as well.

What didn't you find reliable about the dottune implementation. Reading the info about it online by the dottune dev. and the ML dev's, it sounded like they were very close compared to manually doing it.
