The pics show up fine on the cameras LCD but when I try to view them either in Canon DPP or Lightroom 4 it says preview unavailable for this file.

RAW, unlike JPEG or TIFF, varies from camera to camera; newer versions of the software will support older cameras, but an older version of the software can't read files from cameras that weren't around when it was released.
