So, am posting again on this forum, on a sad occasion ... recently I had my camera bag stolen on a flight (wife with kids and myself were sitting in different rows, left my camera bag with main baggage, when I got to the other place to pick up, the camera bag was gone :-( ) containing my newly bought pre-owned 7D, complete with Canon 80-200/2.8 L, Sigma 30/1.4 EX and Sigma 10-20 EX, even the 18-55 kit lens found a new owner :-( That had been the lenses I had assembled over the last 10 years, and I had been pretty happy with the setup.

So I am left now with my old and trusty 20D, Tokina 17/3.5, Tamron 28-70/2.8 (broken, part of the front ring fell off), Canon 50/1.4 (broken, AF needs to be fixed) and a manual Carl Zeiss Sonnar 135/3.5. What to do now ?

I am considering getting a (used) 24-105/4 IS L as "walk-around" lens as the Tamron is not usable and, when usable, was defnitely not stellar. That would go well with my 20D at the moment and possibly also look fine with an upgrade to either another 7D (loved the high ISO) or possibly 5D (classic, would miss the high ISO, used MKii would be great but am not sure if I can afford that). Regarding the Sigma 30/1.4 EX, that lens was great and quite possibly my most used lense, even though it was a bit soft at the corners, so would look at getting another one, but would possibly also consider a 35/2.0, 28/1.8 or even 35/1.4 L (well, dreams are allowed, right?)

If I went for the 5D, I could use the 17/3.5 instead of getting a new UWA, and use my 50/1.4 (have now an incentive to finally get the AF fixed) instead of the 30/1.4... ah, the decisions...

Also, I am right now looking at getting another 80-200/2.8 L as I really loved that lens and especially the fact that the (used price) was below that of a Non-IS 70/200/4.0 L.

Any advice would be appreciated...

Best regards,
Andy

What do you like to shoot? Personally I'd get the 5D or opt for a different system all together if you're planning on new lenses and body. Or just stick with the 20D and pick up another 28-35mm prime for now, I loved my 20D, it was stolen so I feel your pain.

Regardless of what you do, insure your gear. I don't know what it costs to insure your equipment in Germany, but I pay $60 a year to insure $4000+ worth of equipment. Well worth the peace of mind for me, especially after losing my 20D.

Stolen camera. I may be able to locate the camera for you. Being a detective for several years i have access to software that may assist in this manner. Pm me for further.

And here is a software that might be helpful if anyone uses that camera and uploads an image with EXIF on the net:

Thank you for the link to the stolen camera finder.
Worth a try, although I do not know how it could help me to get my gear back, even if I manage to locate the camera. But it is a great first step :-)

Best regards,
Andy

PS: The main reason for me to upgrade from my 20D to the 7D was the high ISO that allows for better low light photography.

Yes, 8 FPS is fun, and better AF is certainly nice (although the AF actually sucked for me, as I could not manage to put AF confirmation to the "*" button in the short time I had the 7D)

Since you are no longer tied up with Canon, I'd look for a smaller/lighter mirrorless option.

Hahaha ... good one, kin2son :-)
I still have my G2 for that...

(No offense, before getting my 7D I was actually looking at the new EOS M, as a smaller option that would accept my existing lenses ... but my impression was that the AF, FPM and other performance might not be up to what I was used to from a dSLRs)

BUT ... really ... thank you for your idea, Kin2son ... because it just made me realize that I DO NOT OWN ANY EF-S LENSES ANYMORE. That has to be some kind of sign, now that full frame cameras are finally somehow affordable :-)

OK, being back to the forum I had the opportunity to read up a bit on new Canon cameras ... seems that my best approach might be to go with EF-lenses for the time being (24-105 and 80-200/2.8 L) and saving my money for a 6D to get at some point in the future....

Regarding that software for finding the camera, I would assume all the person has to do is default the camera to factory settings?

Depending on the camera, just resetting the camera won't remove user names.

Very sorry this happened to you. I think you've got the right idea going with EF lenses and saving up for a 6D. No sense in getting an older FF system that will cost nearly as much with that being so affordable.

Also, +1 to having insurance. Insurance on a 70D, EF-S 18-55 STM & EF-S 18-135 IS is $25/year. It obviously doesn't help you right now, but in the future, it's well worth the minimal cost. Of course, that's in the US, so Malaysia may be different; that's beyond my knowledge.

Check your insurance and get it if you haven't got it.
You can register you gear here for free at lenstag. It is pretty easy to do.

You can get apps for both iphone and android.
It won't stop it from getting stolen, but it might help you get it back.(the new stuff anyway).

I had my 7d with about 6 lenses stolen when my house was robbed about 2 years ago. I was lucky and my homeowners insurance paid me full retail for everything I owned. I saved a little extra and replaced or upgraded all the lenses I had and upgraded to the 5d3. I am currently selling the 24-105 that came in that kit... Since you are finding yourself in the same situation I was once in, I would like to try to help a tad by offering to sell it to you for less than I was asking anywhere else. PM me if interested.

Thank you for all the answers.

Last time I checked (when I was living in Germany, already a few years ago), there was unfortunately no such insurance available :-(
It seems that now there is more offer (also here in Malaysia there seem to be more providers), I will certainly look into that.

Best regards,
Andy
